It should come as no surprise to readers of these pages that your Editor has a thing for luggage. Ok, it is actually a full-blown fetish, but that is a story for another day. That said, good luggage is easy to tell from bad luggage – it is apparent. Look at the construction, the materials and the extra features. Computer luggage is no different than clothes luggage but it needs to be held to a higher standard, after all dropping a bag full of BVDs on the pavement is a lot different than dropping your TiBook.

Pogo is a new hand-held wireless device that delivers 3G-like services on existing GSM and GPRS networks. According to their Web site, Pogo Technology Ltd was founded by Razorfish in Q4 1999 “to explore and define the opportunities within the European mobile data services market. It was fully incorporated as a separate company in July 2000 as part of its seed funding arrangements.”

I have a confession to make. I just bought an iMac. Don’t worry, it isn’t for me, not this colorful little daisy. Once a man goes Powerbook he doesn’t go back. This is for the sales staff. Staff that has never really used a Mac before, and in general, has little computer experience. And you know what? For a person who has never cared for the iMac, I am impressed.

You might want to check out the following article in Unstrung (“When Can iPAQ My PC and Cell Phone Away?” It contains some interesting speculation regarding potential PDA evolutionand some of the factors that may steer it.

The most valid point is that a lot of us need the functionality of ourmobile phones and our laptops, and we will continue to carry at least thosetwo devices (maybe in addition to a PDA) until somebody makes a singledevice that can replace the two or three that we are currently using.

I’ve come across something a little odd about Apple’s firmware updater 4.1.7 and 4.1.8. It claims to enhance performance and stability but it only does one of these, it increases stability and decreases performance.

In further evidence that the new short-range wireless technology is gaining a foothold in the market, Motorola announced that the new Timeport 270c mobile phone includes a Bluetooth interface. The phone operates on the CDMA (code division multiple access) standard and offers 360-degree speakerphone and voice dialing.
