Fits & Starts Productions, in conjunction with Apple, is offering a series of free 5.1 Surround Sound seminars hosted by expert Mike Sokol. The “Pocket Rocket Road Tour” seminars demonstrate how to create effective 5.1 Surround mixes for music, all running off a PowerBook G4, Digital Performer 3, and the MOTU 828 FireWire interface (which is capable of live 7.1 surround without an encoder/decoder!).

The initial tour is over, but starting December 4, 2001 a second tour will travel to the U. of Cincinnati, 12/04/01; U. of North Texas, 12/06/01; Austin C.C., 12/07/01; U. of Texas @ san Antonio, 12/10/01; Houston C.C., 12/11/01; SAE-Nashville, 12/14/01.
I myself caught the tour in NYC Friday. It’s exciting to see what the Titanium coupled with the 828 interface offers portable music creation. DTS-encoded audio was incorporated into a PowerPoint presentation (!), decoded via hardware, while the 828 was also able to drive 5.1 Surround recording, mixing and playback live in Digital Performer 3.0 with no additional hardware. DP3 has been rebuilt from the ground up to take advantage of surround capabilities.
