Ever since the introduction of the LCD iMac at Macworld Expo SF ‘02 one of the most popular topics around the PowerPage water cooler has been the iBook/G4. Logic dictates that when Apple bumps its low-end desktop lineup (iMac) to the G4 processor that the iBook cannot be far behind. Some of the PowerPage’s sources concur, adding that “it is only a matter of time.” Walk on, err, read on using the link below…
Accelerate Your Mac! brings word that the TiBook combo drives for upgrades are finally making their way into the retail channel.
I thought I’d let you know that the combo drive upgrades are finally starting to happen. I took my PBG4 down the Apple Store here in San Diego and had them install it today (2/26). It only took 1 hour, as promised. So far so good, I’ve burned a data CDRW, erased and reburned it, and played audio cds. Burning audio cds and playing dvds will be tried later tonight.
I, like probably a lot of you, ordered mine on 28 January…
Accelerate Your Mac! referred me to this report from InQuest Market Research “Notebook Graphics Accelerators: Part Deux” which compared the ATI Mobility Radeon vs. GeForce4 Go. The article focuses on the video subsystems in PC notebooks but it still offers insight into the future to PowerBook video. The Rev. b (550 and 667 MHz) PowerBook G4s use the ATi Radeon Mobility (AGP 4X, 16MB DDR RAM) chipset while the iBook Dual USB uses the ATi RAGE Mobility 128 (AGP 2X, 8MB SDRAM). The two PowerBooks are some of the last Macs to keep ATi video over Apple’s new flame, nVIDIA.
