Apple Displays for a Wider Audience

The new Apple Displays now match the look of the G5 towers with new aluminum frames and stands, but the real change is the move away from the Apple ADC connector. While very convenient for users of Apple desktop machines, the ADC connector kept Apple displays from selling to a larger market. With Apple market share low, the incorporation of industry standard VESA mounting and conventional DVI connectors in the two smaller screens greatly increases the market for these beauties. The other real advantage is for PowerBook users who no longer need adapters to use these displays. Thankfully, Apple did not develop a second version of the ADC connector incorporating FireWire. The new stand continues the "fingertip" adjustability of the iMac screen and the aluminum finish also complements the PowerBook line. A long time coming, these displays are the logical successors to the plastic framed Studio Displays. The new 30" screen requires a special card with "dual link" DVI connectors to feed more than 4 million pixels to the display. This card also blocks one of the PCI slots in the G5. Unfortunate, but these things are to be expected with bleeding edge products.
