“This new line-up of iBooks, along with the current PowerBooks we have will make-up the complete portable line-up we will be offering for the holidays,” said Moody.

West Coast Mac-a-palooza: O'Reilly, AES, Remix Hotel, DigiWorld

Geeks! Audio! DJs! Macs! Oh, my. The Mac is all about the Bay Area this week with a huge lineup of events, one Mac-only and three audio-related but with heavy Mac involvement expected:

  • O’Reilly Mac OS X Conference: The geekiest and hippest of the big Mac cons, O’Reilly has tracks for digital audio, system administration, and programming, plus a general Mac track and keynotes by the likes of composer/musician Stewart Copeland.
  • AES: A huge pro audio engineer show that has become increasingly computer-centric and will feature exhibits by many Mac music and audio vendors.
  • Remix Hotel: Remix magazine takes over the SF W Hotel and fills it with leading music products and a long lineup of top DJs. And it’s free.
  • DigiWorld: Digidesign opens up its headquarters to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary. Also free, and includes a free AES pass. Digi and Apple are partnering on all this week’s events, so expect plenty of Macs.
  • I’ll be at all four events in San Francisco; hit comments here if you’re in the Bay Area and want to wrangle some PowerPagers together! I’ll also launch createdigitalmusic.com officially over the weekend (yes, it’s down now); together with the PowerPage I’ll bring ‘team coverage’ of all four events live!

White iPods are SO summer `04.
Instead, forget the Apple logo, save your cash, and get a steal on an HP iPod. You can get a full 20GB at iPod mini prices: 20GB are as low as $254, while 40GB HP’s are just $344. Buy.com can get you your 20GB HP $269.99 shipped free or 40GB version $359.99 shipped free. If you don’t like the color, cover it up with one of those new HP skins.
Meanwhile, if you believe ‘rumor site’ Forbes.com, Apple is set to introduce a black iPod at the upcoming U2 event. Black definitely gets my vote for coolest iPod option. Preload it with Hillary Duff and I’ll still want it (and reformat it, naturally). And, of course, there’s the exclusive silver iPod reported here on the PowerPage a few days ago.

XM Radio now has streaming online subscription to their service, but for Windows only. The requirements include software all readily available for Mac OS X – specifically Windows Media Player, Flash Player, & Internet Explorer. Yet it does not work in any Mac browser.
They have a free three day trial which would be great for evaluating the service before buying & installing hardware (car, etc.) You can let them know they have a potential revenue base here.

The Contour Showcase has been updated for the 4G iPod and is now available in both black and white at MSRP $32.95 US. This clamshell case provides protection for everything but the touch wheel control. A detachable belt clip can be reversed left to right, but not rotated. One model can fit 20 or 40GB iPods with the included foam spacer for the slimmer iPod. One nice feature is the see-through back window which allows your engraved message to be visible.

    eMac Replacement?

It is beginning to look like the eMac G4 has reached end of life. This is an important machine, in that it occupies Apple’s lowest pricepoint and is targeted at education. Does this mean that a G5 replacement is in the wings. Likely, but what form will it take? I think this would be a great time to end the life of the CRT at Apple. Am I advocating a more expensive G5 eMac with a built in LCD? Not on your life!

New PowerBook (Aluminum) 15-Inch Battery Arrives in Stores

I received an interesting note about Apple’s recent replacement of most (if not all) of the PowerBook batteries available in their retail stores, presumably due to the recent Aluminum PowerBook 15-inch battery recall on 20 August 2004.

You will recall that when Apple recently updated the PowerBooks to run at 1.5Ghz, they also introduced a slightly improved battery (went from 46 Watt-Hours to 50 Watt-Hours. Unfortunately, they did NOT change the order number for this battery, at least not on the spec sheet. It still says M9325G/A.
But, today I actually found the new battery in an Apple store. The new order number is M9756G/A. There is another way to tell if you have the new battery. On the battery itself it says “Model No. A1045″ for the OLD battery (including the ones that were recalled). The NEW battery says “Model No. A1078.”
Obviously, there is a lot of old stock floating around. A recent visit to the Apple store in downtown revealed that they had opened and re-sealed EVERY box, presumably to look for serial numbers for the recall.
