Treat Me Like a Fool

WashingtonPost.com has an interesting article on some of the April Fools Day jokes that surfaced this year.

Google appears to be dodging and feinting with its April Fools’ Day lineup. Users of its Gmail e-mail program encountered a bar graph and a short note explaining the company’s new project, Infinity + 1. The news seems suspect enough, but if so, the Associated Press and News.com bought it.
But more on that in a moment. Google’s obvious joke shows up on a link off its homepage to Google Gulp — the Beta version.

Apple Retail Store Coming to Downtown Philadelphia? (Updated)

A story in the Philadelphia Business Journal implies that Apple may be opening a retail store in downtown Philadelphia in a space formerly occupied by Borders Books & Music.

In March 2003, Borders moved out of the site to its present Center City location, at 1 South Broad St. The Walnut Street space has been vacant since. Midwood is expected to divide the retail space into three parts, said Steinberg, who is handling leasing for Midwood Property.
Potential clients, Steinberg said, include the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, which is considering opening a high-end wine and spirits store; Apple Computer; Sephora, a high-end cosmetics shop with another area location at the King of Prussia Mall; and apparel retailer Ann Taylor, now at 1713 Walnut St. This would be an additional site for Ann Taylor.
If leases are signed, both the LCB store and Apple would have two-story stores within the existing site.

Updated – A reader mentions that PocketMac PSP is not the first tool to sync music/photos – iPSP does this, and and also converts video. PocketMac PSP is the only app to convert contacts though.

Waterfield's new paraglide buckleSeven years after its debut, the Waterfield Cargo bags have been agitating for a change, so the company is now offering an alternative to the aluminum aircraft buckles that have been a signature feature of these bags. You can now choose either the aircraft buckle or the company’s new black, anodized aluminum paragliding buckle (pictured at right), which they import from Austria. This is the real thing used to strap yourself in paragliding harnesses and is a beautiful piece of machinery.
Their Cozmo line of PowerBook bags has been missing a middle size for some time, so they have now added a new bag that fits “just right.” This sleek briefcase has a reinforced bottom and sides so it stands erect when not being carried. Best of all, it’s very compact and can still holds large laptops, like the PowerBook 17-inch. More information and pictures are available on the Waterfield Web site.

More than one of Apple’s Sherlock channels has gone offline, replaced with the simple message “This channel is temporarily unavailable. Please check back soon.” Both default channels Pictures and Movies have been affected. Any word on what sparked the shutdown?
Pictures is still offline, but Movies are back. Our guess as to the cause: the impending launch of Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) which is anticipated on April 1, 2005.

WMC: Remix HotelToday we’re cross-posting some content from our good friend Peter Kirn’s CreateDigitalMusic.com.
Miami — The Remix Hotel event here this week during Winter Music Conference provides “hands-on access to the technology and equipment used to create today’s electronic and urban music via artist presentations and demonstrations, workshops, clinics and discussion.”
Held at the Eden Roc Hotel in South beach and sponsored by Apple and Guitar Center the event featured a ton of Mac hardware and software on display (Garage Band, Logic, G5s and those sweet 30-inch Apple Studio displays). What really impressed me was the vendor area on the lower level that featured several rooms of equipment from the likes of Mackie, Alesis, M-Audio, Ableton, Pioneer, Rane and Stanton. Your fearless sunburnt editor fell in love with the new Mackie Firewire mixer although I’m still partial to my Rane TTM56 and its patented magnetic fader. Off to the Ultra Music Festival and Carry On… More on those soon!
Ed: Watch for a full image gallery later this evening. It’ll cheer me up here on a dreary day in New York! -PK
