You’ll recall yesterday’s story about the 144 megapixel digital camera that blows away your average consumer digicam. Well, an astute reader pointed us to the 1 gigapixel PanSTARRS camera. Yes, gigapixel.
The four PanSTARRS cameras will each be the largest digital cameras ever built. Each camera will have about one billion pixels spread over an area about 40 centimeters square. For comparison, a typical domestic digital camera contains about 3 million pixels on a chip a few millimeters across.

WSJ.com (Paid Membership Req’d): “Analysts say Apple, of Cupertino, Calif., may be attracted to Intel’s low-power mobile processors, which slash power consumption by shutting parts of the processor off when not in use. IBM, whose legacy is in computer-server chips less concerned with power consumption, doesn’t have a comparable notebook-chip offering.”

CNN has the story on a new fuel cell battery for laptops: “Cambridge-based CMR Fuel Cells said it had made a breakthrough with a new design of fuel cell that is a 10th of the size of existing models and small enough to replace conventional batteries in laptop computers… Fuel cells have for years been touted as the next big green power source. They produce electricity via a chemical reaction and emit only tiny amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) — the main greenhouse gas blamed by many scientists for global warming.”

Every once in a while I receive an email to the effect of “Are you still using your BlackBerry? How is it?” Well, I’m happy to report that I still love my BlackBerry 7100t (which I originally reviewed in January 2005) and still use it everyday. I actually enjoy things that I used to hate like lines, traffic and elevators because instead of twiddling my thumbs I can use them to keep up with email, surf the Web and chat on IM. But one of these days I am going to become a professional gambler with the help of my favorite application for Blackberry: Magmic’s Texas Hold’em King 2. Read more…

BBC’s Click Online: Digital cameras are the technology miracle of the decade, from the flat blurry images we got ten years ago we’ve progressed to stunningly vibrant pictures right up there with film. They went in search of the ultimate way to capture every minute digital detail… Tom Watson, Photographer: “This is a 144 megapixel camera. It writes a 140mb file. If you compare that with the average consumer digital camera, it’s about 100 times more data.” It takes a minivan full of technology. The large format camera is mounted on a sturdy, wind resistant tripod. A laptop and 80gb hard drive are also part of the kit.
