MLMUG Meeting Wrap Up

I had the opportunity to speak at the Main Line Mac Users Group (MLMUG) this Saturday and had a great time. Some of the topics in my presentation included: iPod Accessories iBoom and iDiddy and a discussion about the possibility of PowerBook speed bumps being announced at Apple Expo in Paris next month. The bulk of my presentation was spent on podcasting, podcasting, podcasting.

Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2The last time I tried gaming on the Mac was about two years ago. But, when “Star Wars : Battlefront” came out, I decided to give a shot again (where else can you drive your own AT-AT to crush your Mac buddies?).
I got “BattleFront” and tried to use my trusty xBox controller with modified USB cable and the xBox HID Driver. With much sadness, I discovered that the driver doesn’t work in Tiger. I can’t stand using my keyboard and mouse to play “Battlefont” or any other game for that matter. I guess I’m spoiled from too much console gaming. So, I had to find another good controller and fast (the Empire desperately needed my help). Read More…

Apple?s new Mighty Mouse while long overdue, is unique and better in a number of ways than my current favorite, the Logitech MX510. Aesthetically minimalist, it loses the transparent outer shell of the old optical mouse gaining side buttons and a tiny track ball. Functionally it has some unique strengths and quirks. Read more…


New SETI@home Client and Data Format

SETI@homeSETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. SETI recently updated their client software (BOINC) and data format, so you may want to login and update your software.
Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is a software platform for distributed computing using volunteered computer resources. If you own a Windows, Mac, Linux or Unix computer you can participate in scientific research in many areas:
* study climate change
* Einstein@home: search for gravitational signals coming from pulsars
* LHC@home: improve the design of the CERN LHC particle accelerator
* Predictor@home: investigate protein-related diseases
* SETI@home: Look for radio evidence of extraterrestrial life
* Cell Computing biomedical research

The word ‘Podcast’ was added to the Oxford Dictionary and is now officially part of English language. Definition:

“Podcast” (a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar programme, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player) is now an official part of the English language, as the word has been included in the Oxford Dictionary.

In related news Adam Curry?s PodShow received $8.85 million in venture capital and Evan Williams? Odeo received an unspecified investment from Charles River Ventures, Amicus Ventures, and 14 individual investors.
