HOW-TO: iPod nano Protection on the Cheap

Fellowes WriteRight iPod nanoYou’ve undoubtedly heard the reports of late about scratching and cracking iPod nano screens. While you can’t do much about the screen cracking, except of course to stop stuffing it into the pockets of your tight jeans, you can do something about the scratches until the first wave of nano cases shows up.
The first and best advice I can give is to keep the included screen sticker on the front of the nano. I’m not talking about the “don’t steal music” outer wrapping, under that there’s another thin clear piece of plastic on the front of the nano that you should keep intact to protect against scratches. If you’ve already removed it, you can try putting it back on, but it’s difficult.

Apple Responds to iPod nano Owners

iPod nano BlackApple has responded to the scores of complaints about two issues affecting the iPod nano screens: cracking and scratching.
Apple?s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller was quoted in a Macworld article late yesterday as saying (the screen cracking) “is a real but minor issue involving a vendor quality problem in a small number of units… In fact, this issue has affected less than 1/10 of 1 percent of the total iPod nano units that we?ve shipped. It is not a design issue.”
On the nano scratching issue Schiller goes on to say “We have received very few calls from customers reporting this problem ? we do not think this is a widespread issue… If customers are concerned about scratching we suggest they use one of the many iPod nano cases to protect their iPod.”

Matthew Peterson who set up the protest site flawedmusicplayer.com (formerly ipodnanoflaw.com) has even called off the dogs, posting today “I am very delighted to see Apple take this issue seriously…”

I was a little scared at first, the last time I installed a hard drive into an external enclosure was during President Clinton’s first term in office. This time around was much easier, thanks to the Transport Pro FireWire and USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive Kit. It runs for US$49 and is a snap to install.

iPod nano – Best iPod Yet!

The iPod nano is now the best iPod, with just a few shortcomings. It is limited to 4GB of storage, does not connect via video to your TV to display photos and it has a smaller screen than the iPod. The advantage over the iPod and the discontinued mini is significant. There is no hard drive mechanism making it amazingly small and robust. It is difficult to overstate how important size is. The storage capacity will be irrelevant to users who don?t have enough songs to fill it.

Sony Ericsson k750iI have been using Sony Ericsson phones with my Aluminum PowerBook for about two years now, from the T6810, K700i and now the K750i. I find S/// phones the best phone for Mac users as it’s almost completely built for it.
I use PhoneAgent for syncing and controlling my K750i. It does great things like:
- Backup up of my address book and SIM card address book.
- Creation of themes
- SMS and MMS creation via OS X
- and a few other features, too…
