Apple announced the following at a media event at the California Theatre today:
- iMac – 1.5GHz – 2.1GHz, 17″ and 20″. Now comes with built-in iSight camera and wireless remote control. Prices: US$1299 to US$1759. More info: Apple’s iMac product page and press release.
- iPod – Video playback, QVGA 320 x 240 resolution, 2.5-inch screen, MPEG4, TV output, 30% thinner. 20GB – $299, 60GB – $399. Shipping next week. Still a “music-first” device. More info: Apple’s iPod product page and press release.
- iTunes 6.0 – Major update to Apple’s music player and online music store arrive after only a month after iTunes 5.0. Over 2,000 music videos are available at a cost of US$1.99. You can purchase TV shows for US$1.99 also, including: Desperate Housewives, Lost and three other ABC/Disney shows. All are premiering on iTunes in native QVGA resolution. - Front Row – A combination slender, six-button remote control and exclusive software that turns the new iMac into a media center.
- Photobooth – New application for taking snapshots with the iMac’s built-in camera. It uses the screen as a giant flash bulb to light the subject and comes with dozens of effects like Warhol.

Someone posted a screenshot on flickr of an error dialog that he received in iTunes saying “This item requires at least iTunes version 6.0 to purchase.” Go get the link from Digg and check out the comments. Some are calling it a fake…
So I open up iTunes, do a search for “Death Cab for Cutie”, and click on the “add to cart” button below “iTunes Originals – Death Cab for Cutie”. Then, I get that message.

iLounge has posted some major scoopage on today’s 5G iPod announcement from Apple. Dennis Lloyd, who’s on site at the California Theatre snapped these photos of the new iPod billboards which clearly show a new full size iPod silhouette with a new, larger display and a headphone jack in the top right of the unit. Think Secret is reporting that today’s Apple announcement will be updated iPods with larger screens and hard drives. They’ll have video playback capability, but this isn’t the video iPod.
Hours prior to Apple’s October 12, sources have clarified to Think Secret recent confusion surrounding Apple’s iPod announcement today. In brief: the iPod will be feature video playback capabilities but it is not the video iPod and Apple may not bill it as so. Additionally, Apple will announce partnerships with an unknown number of broadcasting companies that will make content available for download to Apple’s device, as noted yesterday.

According to the Wall Street Journal “Microsoft and Yahoo plan an alliance so that users of their instant-messaging services can communicate directly with each other.” It’s a good start, but what we really need is AOL < -> Yahoo < -> MS interoperability.
