That’s according to rabid Apple fansites spanning the interweb. They all seem to think we’ll get our hands on an ultra-portable from the Mac makers of Cupertino at some point next year.

According to popular conjecture, the fat free portable will use flash memory to start up in a jiffy, and run a cut down version of Apple’s OS X.

We can see the appeal of a pint-sized Mac portable, possibly in tablet form. Its latest laptopsare a little on the large side, and Apple’s decision to discontinue the 12-inch PowerBook left swathes of notebook fans in mourning.

Still, we have to wonder whether Apple would be quick to jump into the UMPC pool. With relatively few exceptions, current ultra-portables leave a lot to be desired.

DVD Jon has a new target in his sights, and it’s a big piece of fruit.
He has reverse-engineered Apple’s Fairplay and is starting to license
it to companies who want their media to play on Apple’s devices.
Instead of breaking the DRM (something he’s already done), Jon has
replicated it, and wants to license the technology to companies that
want their content (music, movies, whatever) to play on Apple devices.
This may not be good news for iTunes the store, but it could make the
iPod even more popular.

Poor Microsoft! Its abandonment of PlaysForSure partners and other strategies related to its solo iPod killer efforts have been mercilessly attacked before the company can even get the new device into the hands of users.
On top of that, it’s also facing stiff competition in pricing. However, according to proponents of Ten iPod vs Zune Myths, the Zune is technically superior, with brilliant wireless sharing features, and will be able to compete with Apple’s iPod as a cheap loss leader. Ahem. They’re wrong, here’s why.

hp-leak-memo.gifOn 23 January, 2006 CNet reporters Dawn Kawamoto and Tom Krazit published a story (“HP outlines long-term strategy”) that detailed HP’s plans to improve the technology the company uses to manage its direct sales, its commercial printing efforts and acquisitions of software companies. The story was attributed to “a source with the company.”
The Smoking Gun has posted an 18-page internal HP report detailing the hunt for the corporate leaker behind the story. The document was released by the House of Representatives committee examining the company’s search, which included obtaining the private phone records for board members and journalists.
