iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 Conspiracy Theory

iphone-1.1.1.jpg

During the process of collecting the US$100 coupon from Apple there's a page on where to find your iPhone's serial number. If you look closely at the Version field it says 1.1.1 (3B13). I don't know about you, but my iPhone says Version 1.0.2 (1C28). (Thanks KennM Sr)

Looks like someone's been taking screen shots with their beta iPhone. Off with their head!

The modem firmware in the screen shot is also substantially newer, showing a version 04.02.04_G. Mine says 03.14.08_G.

It's anyone's guess as to when we'll see the firmware jump to 1.1.1, but being a tenth upgrade as opposed to a hundredth upgrade I'm assuming that it will actually include some features as opposed to the nebulous "bug fixes."

Who wants to bet that Apple is waiting to release the 1.1.x update because they're frantically trying to close the third party application/unlocking holes?

After the iTunes 7.4.2 "update" I don't trust Apple updates any more. I'm officially waiting at least 72 hours before installing any iPhone update. I just like my AppTapp installer too much.

What about you?

On one hand, Steve may be under pressure from AT&T and investors to shut down the unlocking of iPhones. Yet, although he loses on the AT&T side, he may ultimately sell more iPhones if they are unlockable.

On the other hand, he could make more money with wifi iTunes if he lets those with unlocked phones use it as well.

So, it will be interesting see how 1.1.1 plays out. Will it relock the phones, will it be easily bypassable by the hackers ?

I'm pretty sure that 1.1.1 is, among other things I'm sure, the European update with international language and keyboard options.
That's what the UK sample iPhone was running, anyway.

It's probably not a genuine screenshot; it's a mockup, and the artist typed in fictional values, especially the serial number. I'm sure Apple has Photoshop and Illustrator templates set up for quickly mocking up screenshots for display at any resolution.

Not only am I waiting on upgrading any software iTunes and iPhone related.....I have even decided to hold off on upgrading to Leopard and to boycott buying iTMS "licenses". Apple will not not get another cent from me if they insist on taking away the functionality of devices I already own. At least now we know why Apple released such unusable ringtones in the iPhone, so they can profit. I even believe they have a firmware ready and are withholding a release so that they can stiff all of the new buyers who waited to buy once the iPhone was unlocked. iTunes will undoubtedly force us to update the firmware just to sync in the very near future. 7.4.1 and Tiger and T-mobile are all I need right now.
