Microsoft Drops Zune Prices in Response to Apple Announcements
Responding to Apple's announcement of new iPods as well as a Wi-Fi-enabled, touchscreen iPod, Microsoft has announced a US$50 price reduction for its Zune digital media player.
According to Macworld News, a Zune Insider blog entry cited the price drop as planned weeks in advance and not a reaction to Apple's announcements.
;It’s part of the normal product lifecycle, something we’ve had on the books for months," stated the blog post. "We just got some research back and customer satisfaction with the 30GB device is really high (around 94 percent) and we expect even more consumers will now want to discover the Zune experience at the new lower price."
Microsoft has made efforts to compete more aggressively with Apple and is said to be planning to introduce new Zune devices with additional features and form factors, but have yet to cite specific details. The company has dropped hints that an iPhone rival is in the works, but has stated that the Zune is a long-term investment and expects that it will be some time before the unit proves to be a head-on competitor with the iPod, which had a development cycle on it prior to Microsoft's Zune release.
As always, feel free to throw in your thoughts and notions in the comments and forums.

From Zune insider: "... the Zune team remains committed to building a solid experience for users." How stoic. It was a nice idea to put WiFi on a portable music player, but Microsoft didn't go far enough... they just came out with a weird acting iPod. Someone in development is probably having an apopleptic fit of jealousy and denial right now.

Um, so Apple sells an 80GB iPod for the same price as the 30GB zune, can play video, etc, etc... and Zune competes with just a price reduction? How about adding some more features or more HD space or SOMETHING. I think their only choice is the price reduction because they have lots of these they just can't get rid of. They're just minimizing the losses at this point.

Oh yes the utterly transparent lie, fools everyone...
Tell me Balmer do you think this tur.. Zune ahhmm lie will float? No I don't think it will either. Why stop now you have a perfect record of failure, your on a roll. Keep those "investments" coming the shareholders (of Apple) love it.

Is this in addition to the price drop that was reported days before the apple event on 9/5/07?

Technically, they announced it prior to Apple's announcement, so Apple responded to their $50 price drop with an all-new iPod lineup.
