3G iPhone chipset Candidate "3G Phone on a Chip" (Update)

broadcom.jpg

On Monday, Broadcom announced a single-chip HSPA processor that integrates all the key 3G components; High-speed HSUPA 3G baseband, Multi-Band RF Transceiver, Bluetooth (R) 2.1 w/EDR, FM transceiver Radio, 5 MegaPixel Camera support with 30 fps video and TV Out, and most important to Steve Jobs and Apple: "extremely low POWER". When paired with other Broadcom devices, other phone features could be available; WiFi(R), GPS, PMU, or the new VideoCore(R) multimedia processor. If their foundry can match Intel's and start producing the chips in 32nm geometries, the power drain will be even less.

Steve is correct in waiting for low power 3G chips, the current chips would drain the iPhone in less than 2 hours and then lend much support for having replaceable batteries as others have indicated in the forums with their current competing 3G units.

If you are into all the technical details see the entire press release.

UPDATE: Webcast for Media and Analysts to discuss the new product at 12PM EDT
