The Apple Core: Battery Update 1.3 Reveals Flawed Battery Batch, Which Batteries Need to Be Replaced

mbpbattery.jpg

Last week, Apple released an update for users of certain MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops, the process inadvertently uncovering a a batch of flawed batteries.

Following up on this, the company has said that while the batteries don't pose a safety risk, users should request replacement units.

The affected batteries will have one or more of the following symptoms:

-Battery is not recognized causing an “X” to appear in the battery icon in the Finder menu bar.

-Battery will not charge when computer is plugged into AC power.

-Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300.

-Battery pack is visibly deformed.

For the full write up, take a gander David Morgenstern's piece over at The Apple Core.

I have this issue with my MBP battery. I called AppleCare today (after reading this article, as I was not aware of this "recall"). The woman I spoke with confirmed my battery is part of the program, and agreed to ship a replacement to me... as long as I paid for the new battery.

So much for taking care of your customers, Apple!
