iPhone May Use Location-Based Data Over GPS

You like your iPhone, but GPS functionality still has yet to find its way to the device out of unlocking it to run third-party applications. According to Macworld UK, Google has introduced version 2.0 of its Google Maps application for mobile devices. The new version adds a "My Location" feature which incorporates mobile phone tower ID information to offer U.S.-based users their approximate location and helps determine their surroundings.

Since its introduction, speculation has arisen that Apple may introduce the technology to the iPhone.

The My Location technology allows handset users sans GPS-enabled mobile devices (which Google cites as supported by fewer than 15% of the mobile phones expected to be sold in 2007) to receive a location estimate faster than GPS, provides coverage inside buildings (where GPS signals are historically unreliable) and conserves phone battery power better than GPS technologies.

Where the technology is concerned, My Location takes available information from cel towers and sifts it through Google-developed algorithms to help approximate a user's current location. Google cites this approximation as anonymous and does not gather any information that can identify a user. The feature can reportedly also be disabled by those not wanting to use it.

To date, My Location is available on most smart phones including the BlackBerry, Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition devices, many Windows Mobile Devices, newer Sony Ericsson units and some Motorola handsets.

It remains to be seen if Apple will incorporate this via an iPhone software update.
