iPhone and a European Vacation

ivelib-iphone-2_s.jpg

Even though the iPhone has not officially been in France for even four full days the in-country developers have created a useful application for those visiting the country and need to get from place to place efficiently. iPhon.fr just released an article on bicycle rental availability and return locations for those who need a little quick temporary transportation. So if you are going to travel to Lyon, Paris, or Marseille and have your iPhone with a European roaming account your Bicycle rental needs will be simplified. As stated in the original article:

ivelib_changement_de_ville_s.jpg

"The iPhone will not be in the pockets of everyone this day (for those which have the chance to have it, the application Web iVelib makes it possible to find the stations where the bicycles are available and where it is possible to redeposit some.

As it acts of a appli Web, it is not necessary to install application software, simply to point the Safari navigator of the iPhone at this address: www.ivelib.com."

So, all you have to do is point your Browser to www.ivelib.com and register your desired locations. Unfortunately, it does not give you a language option, so if you do not speak French you'll be at a huge disadvantage. Of course you have the same option I've been using to track the French iPhone progress babelfish.altavista.com to provide the site translation. Now this is not just useful for the French but for other countries or resort areas who use bicycles, so if you are an enterprising developer, maybe this is an opportunity calling. The program is open source and a link is available at the bottom of the site. They even have, if you happen to have a Jailbroken iPhone that lets you have the installer.app on your iPhone, a native application for on your springboard.

Those English-speaking friends across the pond have another use for the iPhone, while you're on vacation. Since public urination is prohibited in London, London's Westminster City Council has launched a "Loo" finding service to help relieve visitor's bloated bladders and prevent public urination. When a users texts "toilet" the service pinpoints their location by measuring the strength of the phone signal similar to the Virtual GPS App Navizon and then directs them to the nearest public toilet. Of course we in the US have that same opportunity by Google mapping the nearest Starbucks, using their facilities, and we can then pick up one to go. (Gizmodo)

Let us know what you think over in the comments and forums.

Hello, I'm one of the dev of ivelib.
And concerning the langage issue, we are planning to distribute it in other langages and first in English and for other european cities.

Just be patient (or help us!) and follow news on www.ivelib.com and google code.
