First iPhone Trojan Horse Emerges

iphone3.jpg

Back on the security front, the first Trojan for the iPhone appears to have been discovered. According to Macworld UK, the Trojan, known as "113 prep" was confirmed by security research company F-Secure.

The Trojan itself, which could be calls a virus, doesn't pose a huge risk and specifically targets users who've jailbroken their iPhones to allow the handset to install and run third-party applications. The Trojan masks itself as an update to the popular Erica's Utilities series of program and, according to iPhone enthusiast site Modmyifone.com, apparently says the word "shoes".

Once the program has been uninstalled, the application removes files from the /bin directory on the iPhone, thereby breaking valid third party applications like Sendfile and Erica's Utilities.

The site hosting the application was taken offline soon after it was discovered, reports F-Secure.

"Hopefully this serves as a warning for those who have opened their iPhones using a security hole in the system and then installing unverified software without a second thought to what they are doing," said F-Secure on its site.

The author of the Trojan has yet to be found, although F-Secure has warned that the next Trojan might be created by someone with added skills and with a more specific demographic.

If you've seen this on your iPhone or heard of something similar, let us know in the comments or forums.
