iRiver to Release GSM, Linux-Based iPhone Clone

iphone3.jpg

Over at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, Korean technology firm iRiver has been exhibiting a prototype device known as the "iRiver GSM Phone". According to PC Magazine, the unit bears an uncanny resemblance to Apple's iPhone, is powered by the Linux operating system and features a 3", 480 x 272 pixel touchscreen, single button at the bottom of the device, support for multiple types of media (including Adobe's Flash), support for music subscriptions through Real's Rhapsody service, two megapixel camera and will likely incorporate four gigabytes of flash memory.

Uncertain features that may or may not emerge in the device include Wi-Fi, though iRiver seems to have already settled on having the unit support 3G Internet via HSPA as opposed to 2.5G EDGE access.

iRiver says it intends to release the GSM phone by the end of the year and that it should be less costly than the $399 iPhone. A release in the US is hinted in the unveiling and could potentially support AT&T, though iRiver has not said whether it expects legal challenges from Apple over the similarities in look and feel between each other's phones.

Since a picture's worth a thousand words...:

I can hear a battalion of Apple lawyers descending upon iRiver headquarters right now.

I mean, really. Blatant rip-off, including the interface buttons and layout!

Looks good, much rather one of these than an iphone, for a start it runs linux and hopefully will be fairly open for hacking and expansion. Far better than the dictatorship that apple applies to their consumers.
