MCE Releases 320 GB Mobilestore Performance Notebook Hard Drive with Enclosure
Earlier this week, peripherals manufacturer MCE Technologies announced its 320 gigabyte Mobilestor performance hard drive upgrade for MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops.
The SATA hard drive, which retails for us $349, includes an external enclosure which, according to Macworld, sports both USB 2.0 and Firewire interfaces as well as arrives with installation instructions and a tool kit with which to open up the laptop. The package includes a copy of Shirt Pocket's SuperDuper backup and cloning software to allow for easy migration to the new hard drive.
MCE has rated the drive at 5,400 RPM with a maximum sustained transfer rate of more than 75 megabytes per second with burst transfer rates up to 150 megabytes per second. The drive features Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and S.M.A.R.T. status monitoring, which, supported by Apple's Disk Utility, can warn users if the drive is experiencing problems that can lead to disk failure.
If you've had success with MCE's notebook hard drives or found a favorite alternate manufacturer of your own, let us know over in the comments and forums.

If you are not afraid to physically hack things you can do this much more cheaply. I purchased a Western Digital Passport USB 2.0 external drive. I prized the case open (not for the faint of heart since there are no screws and you have to be careful not to break the case!)and used the drive to upgrade my MBPro 17 inch. I then put my stock 160 GB drive into the enclosure. Warning: the enclosure will not bear repeated openings! And you have to be careful not to break the tabs that hold it together when you do open it. If you are up for a little challenge you get this drive and enclosure for $169 at newegg.com.
