Fujitsu to Release Second 500 GB Notebook Hard Drive

500gigdrive.jpg

It may not be the hippest in solid state drives, but 500 gigabytes is nothing to sneeze at.

Electronics maker Fujitsu has just announced its second 500 gigabyte hard drive, the MHZ2 BT model. Based on a SATA interface, the drive sports a 3.0 gigabits per second transfer rate as well as a power-efficient design.

The caveat: Unfortunately, the drive also features a non-standard, 12.5 millimeter height, meaning it can't be easily installed into most laptops or enclosures. Users may have to figure out a way to shave about three millimeters of surrounding matter out of the way in order to incorporate the unit into their notebooks.

No word has been released as to whether Apple will support the drive, which is slated for release in May.

If anyone has some feedback about this, knows the exact size spec for a replacement drive in a MacBook or MacBook Pro or can figure out a means of modifying their notebook to allow the drive to be cleanly installed, let us know in the comments or forums.

I just installed the 300 GB Fujitsu drive which also has a 12.5-mm height in my 17" MacBook Pro. Many sites have incorrect information, stating that such a drive won't fit in the MacBook Pro, but there is room to spare (in height) even with the 12.5-mm drive! Can't wait to get my hands on the new drive!
