iPhone v1.1.4 Battery Life Conundrum (Update)

iphone-charge.jpg

If you opted to upgrade your iPhone to the supposed bug fix/upgrade v1.1.4, maybe you are experiencing the same problem that I am. What I am seeing is that my iPhone will only operate for a half day without being recharged. Prior to the upgrade, I was able to go all day on a nights full charge. Our head honcho Jason O'Grady is experiencing 10-15% shorter use times since he upgraded.

If the reports that the upgrade provides better usage in fringe areas then a previous observation about the iPhone have been confirmed, that assumption was that if you are using your iPhone in a fringe, low signal, area and are unconnected to a power source the call would disconnect within the first minute but if you were plugged into either your computer or a wall outlet the call could be maintained until completion. What I have tried to ascertain is whether the battery cannot supply the current needed to maintain the radio power or a power conservation technique similar to those used on Apple notebooks. Since the update and the increased ability to maintain a weak signal while untethered (not charging) indicates that the power conservation scenario was the right answer.

This just goes to show that Apple designed the original iPhone for maximum run use, that is the main reason Mr. Jobs said that 3G was not included in the initial release. Apple cited over four million units sold by Macworld San Francisco. On Friday, the company became part of the worlds top 10 handset vendors with only 1% of the global market. With all the press the iPhone is receiving worldwide, a few added features that consume memory and reduce run times that can be hopefully overlooked.

UPDATE: My configuration and usage is as follows: A June 29th 4GB unit that is not jailbroken. WiFi and Bluetooth are always enabled unless I need to force EDGE and not access my Bluetooth headset. I average over 90MB of Data and 1200 Minutes usage a month

If you are experiencing similar usage shortfalls please let us know in the comments or forums.

Has the V1.1.4 upgrade made a difference with your iPhone?
No noticable difference
<10% Less Run time
<25% Less Run time
<50% Less Run time
Less run time but greater call quality in fringe signal areas

Actually I've noticed the exact opposite. I've has two days of heavy use, and the battery still shows about 60% full. This update certainly improved my battery life. Since my batter is older, I'm pretty happy with this update, as I got my iPhone on day one of the release.

Kenn, is your short battery life iphone jailbroken?
Do you keep wifi on all the time?

with 1.1.3 and previous typical usage for me is 5 plus calls a day, 20 plus web pages via edge, ( a couple of hours of reading), and at least 2 hours of audio, sometimes video a day. Never dropped below 50 %, dock nightly.

Just upgraded to 1.1.4 will chime in later with any changes.

I have the same problem. Battery goes dead in half the time as before. With 1.1.3 I only charged every other day. Now I have to charge every day.

OK, so I really don't have anything to contribute about the question.

But I'm really getting fed up about these useless polls that don't list all possible and reasonable answers. What if I experienced longer battery time after the update? What alternative do I choose?

It says something about the mindset of the author when this possibility apparently is not considered. Looking for confirmation?

Useless poll.

Herr Chang,

take less angry pills... there aren't even that many polls done at O'PP. Breath, breath, breath. we're talking about phones here right?

Useless would imply that it served no purpose...But for those who are experiencing one of the problems listed in the poll, it serves a purpose- hence, it is useful.

confirmation denied.

I and a friend have both been having this problem with 1.1.3 and still in 1.1.4.

Having experienced this problem for longer, we have had more time to investigate it. It seems to be due to the Mail application on the iPhone getting stuck when using IMAP connections. This results in it constantly transmitting (via WiFi or EDGE) which is what causes the rapid battery drain. The phone will also get very warm as well.

See http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6481497 and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1387332

If the email accounts are disabled then the problem does not occur. I did not have this problem with 1.1.2. I have even tried putting the iPhone in to recover mode and doing a full reset/restore.

My battery life has also gone up. I'm on day 3 without a charge, instead of day 2.

My battery life also seems to have improved. I used run out everyday, or even earlier, but now I'm not using half the charge in a day.

I have used my phone with 1.1.3 for a month and i was very happy with the performance - never crashed and the battery run for good two days but after upgrading to v1.1.4 on which i haven't seen any difference at all except from that my phone has crashed atleast 4 times in a week and the battery wont last a day!! I have now decided to downgrade back to the good old 1.1.3 :)
