Give It as Well as Take It...

This just came out from Lenovo's most recent ad campaign:

Let the nitpicking begin via the comments and forums.

Fair point - has apple given up too much in their ultraportable? Yeah, the Thinkpad didn't totally fit in the envelope, and yeah, Apple has more full featured alternatives. But the MacBook air gave up a lot to be what it is.

Macbook air still faster than the X300. Lenovo probably didn't sell many of the X300s that's why they are advertising it like crazy.
I much rather have something that's beautiful, fast, slimmer and alumium case plus extra $900 in my pocket.

sorry lenovo, it's just not in your DNA

"But the MacBook air gave up a lot to be what it is."

...and that is why it is selling so fast they can't keep them in stock!! Perhaps folks just don't NEED all the stuff it gave up...

I think the MBA does lack a bit (a 4-pin FW400 should have been included at least), but this Lenovo add is a bit unfair.

1) It is a compromised portable in many ways relative to the MBA: Heavier and thicker, not to mention slower and runs an inferior operating system (I guess that's opinion, but the MBA can run ANY OS). It does include and optical drive, so I guess that's good.

2) They show the MBA with the micro-DVI adapter, yet (as far as I can tell) the X300 doesn't support an external display at all.

Fair is fair but I'm pretty sure that the Apple Operating System will kick the others hands down. Wasn't there an article showing a VP at Microsoft using an Apple product to conduct a presentation? Puts it all into perspective doesn't it?

...and there's no compromise in having to use Vista?

Looking at the Lenovo at the end makes me realize how ugly it was, made me want the MBA. The Lenovo looks so.. 1990's.

All the manufacturers are in terra incognita here. If it weren't for windoze the Lenovo is probably the more useful machine but I'm holding out for a Mk 2 Air with more ports, especially firewire or a card slot...

Haha that's great!

Problem I see here too that would quickly reduce all that clutter of wires is that when you want to use the CD/DVD burner you need to plug it directly into the laptop- hubs will not power the drive.. Not even those with external power sources. So if you need the drive you can't use a hub, mouse, ethernet, tablet, nada.. Problem solved. Macbook Air should have 2 USB ports minimum.

I have be playing with an X300 at work and I have to say it is a very nice laptop. Very good construction, has a great feel to it. The MBA is nice too, but I don't think they are aiming for the same market. The MBA display is nicer from what I have seen at the Apple Store.
Apple is changing the rules with this and proving that many people can get by with a wireless laptop with no optical drive. It's not intended to be a full function laptop, and it succeeds in that regard.

Don't be stupid. If you want the ports & the drive, you get a MacBook. If you want light, portable sexy CPU & disk & display & keyboard ONLY (like a lot of commuters do), you get the MBA.

Seriously, look around you on the train or plane: see anybody with external peripherals hanging off ANY laptop? And who burns their battery time watching a DVD when a DVD player is 1/10 the price and lasts 4x as long?
