iPhone, iPod Touch Capable of Displaying 720 x 576 Video at 25 FPS

Ok, this is interesting.

According to Ars Tecnica, the iPhone and iPod touch handsets are capable of displaying higher-resolution video than that which Apple cites.

Per the story, Apple claims the iPhone and iPod touch are capable of running 640 x 480 video at 30 frames per second. The article claims that the units are actually capable of running video at 720 x 576 resolution at 25 frames per second.

This discovery may not be stunning to users content with the video playback on their units, but is more poignant to European users who PAL-encoded DVDs function at the 720 x 576/25 frames per second resolution.

If you've heard anything about this on your end, let us know over in the comments or forums.
