The Apple Core: USB Port Power Levels Differ on Apple Laptops

fruitlogo1.jpg

Jason's been slightly paranoid about Mac OS X 10.5.2 for a while and hankering for the 10.5.3 update, but he's made an interesting point about something new: the amount of power flowing to specific USB ports on current Apple laptops.

In this case, one USB port will work fine, the other will have an insufficient amount of power running to it.

For the full details, take a gander at the Apple Core and if you've seen this on your end, let us know what you think over in the comments or forums.

I've had this problem since my PB 1.5 G4- I've also noticed recently that some cables do not carry enough current. I have a slew of USB cables that will work fine for my flash card reader- then some that don't work for it, then others that will work for the card reader, but won't carry enough current for a usb drive. I thought at one time that it was only the port, but now I'm seeing that the cable itself has something to do with it as well.
