Apple May Have Ordered 50 Million NAND-Flash Chips for iPhone Units

According to the spiffy folks at DigiTimes, electronics manufacturer Samsung has issued a warning to its other customers stating that the supply of NAND-Flash chips will be cut sharply during the month of July thanks to an Apple order of 50 million 8GB-equivalent chips. The units are said to be mostly slated for use in upcoming iPhone handsets.
As a result of the order, the NAND-flash unit supply may be constrained for a period of time, as Samsung made an attempt in April and May to reduce oversupply. Despite Appleās large order, many industry insiders are still in doubt about its impact, noting that Apple already purchased 25 million 8Gb-equivalent NAND flash chips from Samsung in June. The analysts have also stated that future Apple orders will depend largely on iPhone sales.
If Apple needs a NAND-flash chip, they'll have some on hand. Other than that, I think they just wanted to say they have 50 million NAND-flash chips hanging around, which would be pretty neat if that were your thing.
If you have your own ideas about the order, let us know over in the comments or forums.
