USB Hub May Affect iPhone/iPod Touch Sync Time

An interesting piece over on UKMAC.NET describes how the author found that after upgrading to the 2.0 firmware, his App Store synching for his iPod touch had gotten slower and slower to the point where it became an almost overnight activity.
The author then went on the remove installed applications, try other workarounds and discovered that a Belkin USB hub used to sync the device might be at fault. Although the hub had always worked fine in the past, the author then went on to try directly plugging the iPod touch into his iMac's USB ports.
The result: The sync now occurred in about five minutes.

Wow! Just came home from work, read this posting and looked down to discover that yes indeed, I have a Belkin USB router (F5U237) and in addition to my keyboard/mouse, I plug my iPhone (1st gen. system ver. 2.02) into it everyday. I have almost conditioned myself to not bother trying to sync my phone during the day or I simply cancel the backup process because it takes too much time. First time I plugged the phone directly into the computer (iMac 2.8 GHz OS X 10.5.4), 6 MINUTES!
For the past year, I have always plugged the phone into the Belkin router and I'm not sure why version 2 of the iphone software doesn't seem to like my Belkin router, but, it doesn't. Someday, when I have some time on my hands, I might try the phone with the Belkin again just to prove that the router was the problem but for now, I am pleased.

Strange. I have a Newer Tech external drive that I have used to synch my iPhone with through its USB connection. As of the last software release for the iPhone 3G, it won't synch using the USB in the drive, and won't charge either. But when I connect it directly to the USB port on my iMac, it charges and syncs properly. I've written about my iPhone and iPhone 3G experiences at http://johnkendrick.wordpress.com if you care to visit. John

I sync on a MacBook Pro, directly connected with no other USB devices on the computer and it still takes an hour to backup.

OK, just synced again with the phone connected directly to the computer. Well over two hours :-( Guess I will wait till sys 2.1 and iTunes 8 come out (9/9 ?) and hope things are improved.

Hi, I wrote the article linked to here and from contact I have had a fair few people have had their sync problems resolved by plugging into their Macs directly. Unfortunately it doesnt seem to be the fix in a few cases so there must be another issue at play as well, however at least this is a fix for some.
Cheers

This might be a bit of a fix ...
Either way my iPod Touch takes 5-20 minutes to sync & there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the longer or shorter sync ...
There are serious iPhone & iPod Touch serious issues with sync ...

Make sure to check that you aren't using a USB 1.x hub on a USB 2.0 port. If you do, it will slow things down to a crawl.
