iPhone OS 2.2 Beta Points Towards Google Street View, Auto-Correction Support

Wait long enough and the good stuff will be on its way.

According to AppleInsider, the most recent beta version of the iPhone OS 2.2 operating system contains Google Street View support as well as an auto-correction toggle hidden in the software.

The article also cites a MacRumors piece which mentions an auto-correction preference that can be turned on and off as the user dictates. A request for this functionality was recently the subject of an online petition that has since received over 20,000 signatures.

Google's Street View feature, when released, will be built into the iPhone's "Maps" application and provide 360 degree panoramic views of major cities and their surrounding areas using still photographs that have been stitched together. Google and T-Mobile recently highlighted support for Street Views on the G1 -- the first Android-based handset due to go on sale later this month.

The iPhone OS 2.2 update also seems to feature the groundwork for emoji icon support. Emoji is a form of Japanese clip art that can be inserted into e-mail messages.

Apple has yet to offer a set release date for the iPhone OS 2.2 update and it's unclear as to exactly which features will be present when the firmware ship.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available and let us know what you think over in the comments or forums.
