Through The Wash: The World's Most Entertaining Train Wreck
10 May 2008 11:55 EST
Chris Barylick
Back in October, we posted an article asking for an iPhone to send through the washer and dryer cycles of a conventional washing machine in order to perform a video review of how well it survived.
Some of you posted testimonials as to how well your own iPhones had survived their sudsy journeys.
Others asked if we had lost our minds.
And you were right to do so.
In the several months since then, I took it upon myself to follow through on an idea that Jason called "the world's most entertaining train wreck." Through The Wash has launched and, with the help of several friends from the D.C. stand up comedy scene, we've begun to hash out video reviews (including outtakes) as to which consumer electronics survive their journeys through the washer and dryer cycles.
To date, we've tested the following:
-A Nintendo Wii remote.
-Apple iPod headphones.
-An iPod Shuffle.
-An SD card.
-A Flash drive.
Future reviews will probably include the following:
-A Nintendo DS.
-A Nintendo DS game.
-A Sony PSP game.
-And, the big kahuna...a first generation iPhone.
This isn't news as much as it is entertainment, but when was the last time you left your iPod in the blender?
With that in mind, check out the sample below (warning: mild NSFW language), visit the site, let us know what you think and if you have any suggestions, let us know in the comments or forums.

We Want Your Opinion: Sound Off on Mac OS X 10.5.2
13 February 2008 09:04 EST
Chris Barylick
Mac OS X 10.5.2 has been out for a few days.
And so far, it seems to install and run pretty cleanly with only one major complaint stating that it had nuked a user's playlists in iTunes.
Still, it's a fairly major operating system update. And in situations like these, the results run the gamut from everything running smoothly to the living room carpet having erupted in flame for no apparent reason while the terrier is now slow-dancing through the kitchen with the cat.
That being said, we here at the PowerPage want to hear how Mac OS X 10.5.2 has gone for you. What's gone right, what's different, what's better, what's worse and what appears to have completely gone out the window?
If you've discovered an update, solution or workaround to a problem or issue, let us know in the comments or forums.
And if something's really gone wrong, I'll be happy to hand out the torches and pitchforks in front of One Infinite Loop.

Broadcom Releases HEDGE Reference Platform
11 February 2008 04:21 EST
Kenn Marks
According to an early morning press release from Barcelona Spain at the 2008 Mobil World Congress.
Broadcom announced today a new HEDGE reference design platform (Broadcom BCM92153) that will significantly accelerate the process of developing next generation smartphones for mass consumer handsets. The new reference design is based on Broadcom's breakthrough 65-nanometer single-chip dual-core HSDPA + EDGE multimedia baseband processor and integrates the leading connectivity solutions on a compact, cost-efficient platform featuring all-Broadcom(R) silicon for the major communications components.
Back in October of 2007, Broadcom introduced the BCM2153 3G baseband processor and the BCM59035 power management unit, which we reviewed. These devices have now been combined into a complete reference platform to help developers evaluate and incorporate these devices into their next handset designs.
The new HEDGE reference design platform integrates a HSDPA baseband modem (with world-class application, audio and multimedia processors) and a Category 8 HSDPA modem (that delivers 7.2 Mbps third generation (3G) connectivity for advanced applications) on a single monolithic chip. The platform provides demonstrated support for the three major mobile operating systems. Advanced connectivity features include Broadcom's industry proven Bluetooth(R), Wi-Fi(R), GPS and FM radio technology, along with advanced digital image processing that features support for an up to 3.2 megapixel camera built in. With this level of integration, the new HEDGE reference design platform requires less board space, cost and power than competing solutions, provides fast time-to-market and eliminates the cost premium typically associated with HSDPA handsets today.
With what the iPhone and iPod Touch offer, this chip set could be what we've been waiting for to get the next generation Apple product to market....

Starbucks Ditches T-Mobile for AT&T
11 February 2008 01:52 EST
Kenn Marks
The news wires are humming with the news announced this morning that Starbucks is ending its six year agreement with T-Mobile to have their service provide wireless access within the store and that AT&T is the new provider. This is unbelievable news to iPhone and iPod Touch users who had to purchase T-Mobile access cards, or monthly accounts, if they wished to have WiFi access while consuming their favorite beverage. With this announcement 7,000 U.S. Starbucks locations will have AT&T WiFi access begining this spring with full implementation by year's end. This coincides with previous news that Apple will be partnering with Starbucks to provide a Starbucks music playlist with purchase options while in the proximity of the store and with a similar deployment time line.
T-Mobile customers will still be able to use the Wi-Fi services at no additional costs through an agreement between AT&T and T-Mobile. Nearly all of AT&T's broadband Internet customers will automatically have unlimited free Wi-Fi access at Starbucks, this includes users of Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch.

The Forums: Guess Who Just Got Banned?
28 November 2007 09:14 EST
Chris Barylick

We gave the user multiple warnings.
We told him (or her) to stop spamming.
And, like a complete idiot incapable of getting it, they kept posting to the PowerPage forums about a converter utility that would solve all your problems, convert to every format under the sun and probably vacuum the living room if you paid a bit extra.
"Appleiphone" or "madison" or whatever he wants to call himself (or herself) is gone now and will continue to be banned if they keep posting.
The point is this: The forums are there for discussion. If you want to throw an idea out, have found something cool or have a question, that's what they're there for.
When it comes to insulting another user or trying to sell a hackneyed product over and over again, this will only lead to a permanent ban via a zero-tolerance policy and that's the end of the argument.
Besides, how credible is your product if you can't sell it through legitimate channels and have to resort to spamming a web site's forums as part of your "marketing" scheme? This is the hallmark of someone who calls the hood of their '87 Corolla their "desk" and a coffee shop with free wireless access their "office", despite the fact that the owner finds them creepy and would really like them to actually buy something or leave.
The comments and forums are there for a reason. Use them. Live them. Love them. But act like the class dunce and we will treat you like one.

Apple Publishes Holiday Extended Hours/Secret Sale Program for Retail Store Locations
23 November 2007 09:00 EST
Chris Barylick
Today's Black Friday.
And you couldn't get me shopping with the masses if my life depended on it.
For those braver than me, the guys over at The Mac Observer have noticed that Apple has just announced special extended hours for their retail stores this holiday weekend and have also posted special hours into January.
The extended store hours will vary form store to store, but can be found here. Just go to the web site, pick a state and then a location to see the hours as they stand.
The company is also holding its annual one-day "Ready. Set. Shop." sales event today wherein the exact items on sale are a secret, though Apple typically offers discounts on new computers, accessories, iPods and other items. The sale will be available for both U.S. and Canadian shoppers who go to an Apple Store location or visit the web site.
Full information as well as discounted items can be found here.

Apple Authorized Business Agent Goes the Way of the Dodo
21 November 2007 10:15 EST
Kenn Marks
According to a letter from Apple's Contract Management office dated Friday, November 16th, 2007, Apple will be disbanding the Apple Authorized Business Agent program. In the AABA program, participants earned fees whenever their clients purchased Apple and related third-party products from an exclusive online store -- the Apple Business Agent Store. This announcement will affect approximately 800 agents across the United States.
By having this relationship with Apple, those agents recommended Apple products and third party solutions, then bought those products through their own private online store and did not have to incur the costs associated with becoming an Authorized Apple Reseller; Retail Space, Authorized Technicians, and Sales Staff.
"We appreciate your contribution to Apple's business as part of the Apple Business Agent program. Unfortunately, after careful consideration, we have decided to end this program," the e-mail said. "In accordance with section 12 B(i) of the Authorized Business Agent Agreement ('Agreement'), Apple is notifying you that your Agreement will be terminated effective January 1, 2008."
As one MacNN member notes:
"Personally, I never took this program too seriously because I know from experience that Apple makes these types of about-face moves at a moment's notice. Historically, time and again, Apple [has] proven to be loyal only to Apple, disregarding the needs of the individual resellers and evangelists who built Apple from the ground up and stuck with them through their lean times."

It's Official - Leopard Arrives October 26th (Updated-2x)
16 October 2007 09:18 EST
Kenn Marks
Apple's Leopard web site has been updated to reflect the arrival of the latest and greatest incarnation of OS X 10.5 - a.k.a "Leopard". Not only do they give us a day but a countdown counter with up-to-the-second updates. According the counter and my network-updated, time clock we will be able to get our hands on Leopard on October 26th at 6:01 PM (time zone not specified - but the countdown timer does change if you change time zones). If you don't wish to party at a local Apple retailer on the 26th you can pre-order at the Apple Online Store and if FedEx delivers early in your neighborhood you can be the first to have installed Leopard and have the bragging rights to be #1 in your locale. The Apple Stores will close at 4PM and then reopen at 6PM with the shelves loaded.
“Leopard, the sixth major release of Mac OS X, is the best upgrade we’ve ever released,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “And everyone gets the ‘Ultimate’ version, packed with all the new innovative features, for just $129.” Also available is a 5-User Family pack for $199.
Apple is touting 300+ new features (316 to be exact), "even Leopard innovations have innovations". There are 38 new categories of features including: Unix (12), Xcode 3 (10), and Terminal (9), hopefully most of us will never have to experience any of those. I'll be reviewing all of them and will update this post with my top ten later today.
UPDATE: OS X Server Leopard is also being released the same day and packs 250 new features, including Podcast Producer, Wiki Server, Spotlight Server, and iCal server. A 10-Client version will cost $499 and the Unlimited Client version $999. Leopard Server claims to be the easiest server to install that you do not even need IT department support because it uses Apple's new Server Assistant and Server Preferences feature.
UPDATE 2: Top Ten New features
No. 10 - Google Maps Access from Address Book (a la iPhone).
No. 9 - Boot Camp - Automatic PC Key remapping whatever keyboard you use.
No. 8 - Automator Support for non-Automator-aware applications.
No. 7 - Dashboard - Web Clip - Make Dashboard widgets from any portion of a web page.
No. 6 - Quick Look - Look inside a document without launching the application.
No. 5 - iChat - Photo Booth effects including chroma keying so you can be seen in front of the Grand Canyon while chatting from your living room..
No. 4 - DVD Player Float - Lets you watch movies in the background while the DVD window floats above foreground applications and a Time Slider that lets you scrub through a video.
No. 3 - .Mac Syncing - Of Dock, Dashboard Widgets.
No. 2 - Leopard Desktop - Download Stacks and Sorting Stacks.
No. 1 - Time Machine - Backup for those who often forget.
Out of 316 features it was a tough choice but one of my other favorites that they list are the Safari changes. But, if you downloaded Safari 3.0 Beta you've already experienced those features.

3G iPhone chipset Candidate "3G Phone on a Chip" (Update)
15 October 2007 01:29 EST
Kenn Marks
On Monday, Broadcom announced a single-chip HSPA processor that integrates all the key 3G components; High-speed HSUPA 3G baseband, Multi-Band RF Transceiver, Bluetooth (R) 2.1 w/EDR, FM transceiver Radio, 5 MegaPixel Camera support with 30 fps video and TV Out, and most important to Steve Jobs and Apple: "extremely low POWER". When paired with other Broadcom devices, other phone features could be available; WiFi(R), GPS, PMU, or the new VideoCore(R) multimedia processor. If their foundry can match Intel's and start producing the chips in 32nm geometries, the power drain will be even less.
Steve is correct in waiting for low power 3G chips, the current chips would drain the iPhone in less than 2 hours and then lend much support for having replaceable batteries as others have indicated in the forums with their current competing 3G units.
If you are into all the technical details see the entire press release.
UPDATE: Webcast for Media and Analysts to discuss the new product at 12PM EDT

No Longer Roughly Drafted
15 October 2007 08:15 EST
Kenn Marks
Our Apple comrade in San Francisco, Daniel Eran Dilger, has come up against the electronic Internet ceiling. After using iWeb and .Mac to host his internationally famous Apple OpEd pages for the past two years, Daniel has come to the rude realization that .Mac is not intended for a high traffic web site. So, as of October 8th the site has been ported to WordPress to automate his publishing.
The look is new and fresh but the content is still concise and insightful. Maybe it was .Mac or iWeb '08 problems that caused the switch (an article in the making). Roughly Drafted Magazine's about page contains some surprising statistics about the type of people who are interested in everything Apple-related and what it takes to publish an Apple-centric web site. Since RDM is not the typical rumor site but a technology opinion and editorial publication, Daniel's articles are not typically short paragraphs but multipage exposés of past, present, and future technologies. If you crave knowledge about how personal computing evolved and the highs and lows along the way RoughlyDrafted.com is the place to invest some time.

PowerPage Forums Return
25 June 2007 01:21 EST
Chris Barylick
After a fairly long hiatus, the PowerPage forums have officially returned and are up and running.
Once again, you can discuss all things Apple, Mac, portable, software, iBook, iPod, iPhone, hardware, mods, hacks, fixes, workarounds, opinions and whatever else is on your mind. The forum also features a buy and sell section as well as a stolen laptop registry where you can submit the information for a stolen Mac laptop that might have gone missing and hopefully the PowerPage community will be able to help out.
If you're going to participate, there are a few rules to follow. PowerPage has existed as a community for 12 years now and is based on an interest in the Mac, mobile technologies and where all this is headed. You guys have always piped up with a comment, idea, suggestion or opinion and that's kept things going. Still, it only takes a few jerks to ruin a conversation, so be warned that the forums will be monitored and anything severely off-topic, insulting to another user or smacking of spam will receive no more than one warning before being banned.
The goal isn't to establish anything authoritarian or too tightly controlled, but something that can be participated in and enjoyed by everyone as well as serve as a great resource created by a community that's interested in something and has suggestions as to how to make a good thing better.
So, without further ado, the forums are open and waiting.
Have at it.

Announcement: Joost Offer Continues

You people are demented.
And that's a good thing.
We're now at 245 requests for Joost invitations and if you haven't gotten yours yet, I'll get it out as soon as I can today.
For the time being, if you'd still like an invitation, let me know via the comments (don't post your e-mail in the comment itself, as spam-bots like to collect addresses where possible and usually use publicly viewed fields like this). The only proviso is that Joost only runs on Apple's current Intel-based hardware, so if you have an older machine, you might have to borrow a friend's Mac to try it out.
If you've gotten the Joost invitation and had a chance to play with it, feel free to chip in your two cents.

No repayment is necessary, but if someone out there is in a position to make sure that Paris Hilton is deployed into deep orbit with only 20 minutes of oxygen and a Rubik's Cube for company, that's all I ask.
Update: Guys, you probably shouldn't put your e-mail in the body of the comment. We here at PowerPage aren't in the spam business and don't harvest your e-mails, but various spam bots do. Just be careful about it and it should save a few headaches down the road!

Regarding the iPhone: Chris Owes You a Sundae at MWSF
19 December 2006 08:14 EST
Chris Barylick
After weeks of rumors, speculation and build-up regarding the possibility of an Apple iPhone and finally a due date of Monday for an announcement, we finally received news of an iPhone - from Linksys.
Needless to say, more than a few people were disappointed.

I also promised to buy readers an ice cream sundae if Apple didn't announce an iPhone device yesterday and it's time to face up to this. Come Macworld Expo San Francisco, we'll be combining the annual PowerPage photo with a Monday night migration out to an ice cream shop near the Moscone Center that PowerPage editor Jason O'Grady mentions as serving an extremely decent sundae.
We're shooting for a time on January 8th and further details will be published as they become available.
