Apple Announces 600 MHz iBook Revision

Apple today announced a new iBook Dual USB lineup to complement their newly upgraded PowerBook G4 Titanium.

The new iBooks feature a fast 500 or 600 MHz PowerPC G3 processor, 256K on-chip cache running at full processor speed, and a 100 MHz system bus and the ATI RAGE Mobility 128 graphics accelerator with 8MB of SDRAM and AGP 2X support for gorgeous 3D graphics.

You can still choose between CD, DVD-ROM or DVD/CD-RW combination drive that plays DVDs and burns CD-ROMs – an unfortunate omission on the higher priced PowerBook G4.

In addition, Apple bumped the size of the hard drives. The 500 MHz iBook and the 600 MHz DVD-ROM system ship with 15 GB Ultra ATA hard disk drives, and the 600MHz iBook with the DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo drive features a 20 GB Ultra ATA hard disk drive. And you can upgrade to an optional 30GB hard drive via a Configure To Order (CTO) option through the Apple Store.

Apple Store pricing is as follows:

  • 500 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 15 GB, CD-ROM, US$1299
  • 600 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 15 GB, DVD, US$1499
  • 600 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 15 GB, CD-RW, US$1599
  • 600 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB, DVD/CD-RW, US$1699
