The PowerPage has learned about a project inside Apple that will allow you to communicate via TCP/IP over FireWire. IP over Firewire would conceptually allow you to have one less cable in your bag and opens the door for all kinds of cool connectivity and networking options. Imagine file sharing over a fast FireWire connection, it would be like Target Disk Mode without having to give up the use of one of the computers. Even better: imagine being able to play a network game with your neighbor on the plane over FireWire – cool!

Apple is developing software that will allow you to communicate via TCP/IP over FireWire. Currently it is only available to developers. “With this software installed, Macintosh computers and other devices can use existing IP protocols and service?including AFP, HTTP, FTP, SSH, and so on…”
