Late Thursday, Apple posted version 2.2 of its Apple TV software. The update, available through the device's settings, includes assorted security fixes (CVE-ID: CVE-2007-4674, CVE-2008-3626 and CVE-2008-3629) which all relate to locking down maliciously crafted movies or PICT files.

According to iPod Observer, users can force an immediate update by navigating to Settings -> General -> About -> Update Software. The download typically takes several minutes on a high speed broadband connection.

If you've tried the new version and have any feedback about it, please let us know in the comments or forums.

Apple TV 2.0 Update Now Allows Users to Buy Movies From iTunes Store

The Apple TV's been a strange device, especially in terms of updates: to wit, Apple releases an update without much information as to what's changed and it's left to the user base to determine the differences and if anything's improved.

According to iLounge, a new feature shows movies available for purchase with a "Buy" button. Up until now, Apple TV users were only able to directly rent movies from the device and movie purchases were limited to the desktop version of iTunes, which then had to be synced with the Apple TV.

The ability to buy movies directly from the Apple TV comes at the same time as Apple's announcement that movies would be available for purchase at the iTunes Store on the same day as their DVD release. Prior to the change, movies appeared on iTunes within 30 days of their availability on DVD.

If you've seen this or other major changes to your Apple TV on your end, let us know over in the comments or forums.

Late last week, Apple released version 2.0.1 of its Apple TV software. The first update since the device's "Take 2" software was released, the update generally contains relatively non-specific bug fixes and improvements.

Update: Per Macworld, the 2.0.1 update provides the following specific changes:
-Users will now find a new "Genres" entry in the Apple TV's "My Movies" screen.

-Users can sync podcasts directly from the iTunes Store to the APple TV. When the Apple TV is next synced with iTunes, downloaded podcasts will be synced to the unit where they'll appear in the iTunes Podcasts area.

-A new "Skip When Shuffling" option allows certain tracks in a playlist to be skipped altogether.

-A new "Plus for Progress" option allows users to see just how far along they are in a movie, TV show or podcast by pressing the Apple Remote's plus button to make a blue progress bar appear.

Users can update their Apple TV through the device's system settings, whereupon the unit downloads and installs the patch.

If you've tried version 2.0.1 of the software on your Apple TV and noticed any major changes, please let us know in the comments or forums.

Some Users Cite Problems with Apple TV 2.0 Update
15 February 2008 08:30 EST

The Apple TV 2.0 ("Take Two") update has been out for a few days now to generally positive feedback. Unfortunately, according to MacFixIt, a number of users have cited problems either installing the update or have reported issues with the update once it has been installed:

"When I download the software update "take 2" my Apple Tv restart very quickly and return to the 1.1 software. I can't update to the new software." "Everytime I go to update my Apple TV, it downloads the update ( about 30 minutes), then as I apply the update, it goes to the Apple logo and then back to the menu saying that the update failed. I've repeated this several times to no avail." "I am unable to apply upgrade my original Apple TV. The upgrade stalls and quits. Unplugging the Apple TV and even restoring original Apple TV factory settings are to no avail!"

Other issues reported with the update include the units brightness settings menu as missing after the update, some HDMI users reporting that audio no longer working through HDMI after the update (switching to component cables solves the problem) and TV shows purchased from the iTunes Store not playing, the Apple TV telling the user the shows are in an incorrect format.

Still other users have reported problems syncing to their iTunes libraries. Interestingly enough, several users reported that fixing permissions via the Disk Utility application resolved this problem.

How has the Apple TV 2.0 update treated you? If you've seen issues with the update or discovered solutions or workarounds, let us know over in the comments or forums.
