Apple's New Pro PowerBook, 102

The PowerPage has learned that the next professional PowerBook will probably debut some time in the first half of 2000, probably during WWDC in early May. The new model has been nicknamed “Pismo” around the Apple campus as an offshoot of the “Bismol” code-named that adorned iBook. The model will effectively replace Lombard as the high end of the PowerBook lineup and will sport a Motorola PowerPC 7400 processor (G4) running in the neighborhood of 500 MHz. The exact plastics have not been finalized but the industrial design is expected to be different than Lombard.

In other news, Sawtooth production is ramping up after a reported nine (count ’em) iterations of the ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits). Apple engineers finally have the systems running up to their rigid QC standards, which will allow an entirely new generation of high performance hardware to come through in both the pro PowerBook (102) and pro desktop versions.
