Exclusive: Apple Plasma Displays to Rock MWSF (Updated)

A funny thing happened when I walked into the convenience store this morning: as I was grabbing my usual breakfast sandwich (sausage, egg and cheese on a english muffin if you must know) from the warming rack at Wawa (a favorite shop for those in PA/NJ) the guy re-stocking the rack whispered something to me. I was wearing my Apple logo'd sweatshirt, so he says "so you like Apples, huh?" to which I replied "yeah..." not knowing where he was going.

He went on to tell me that he had a friend who had a friend who knew something about a new and special Apple announcement that was going to be made on Tuesday's Macworld Expo keynote address in San Francisco. Sandwich Man (not his real name) elaborated that this was an announcement that he hadn't seen reported anywhere on the Web. Intrigued, I asked him for more...

Sandwich Man proceeded to tell me that Apple was about to rock the consumer electronics world again with an entirely new product line that they've never sold before. After some prodding he told me that Apple would announce two new widescreen HDTV plasma displays at Tuesday's keynote address at Moscone.

"Plasma HDTVs?" I yelped.
"Not so loud," Sandwich man replied, "The shift manager is the former Asteroid PM from Apple and I don't want him to hear me!"

We shuffled over to the coffee bar where I pressed him for more. He went on to say that Apple would release 42 and 50-inch widescreen plasma HDTVs loaded with DVI-HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) and VGA Inputs.

Most will shiver at the thought of built-in HDCP because it limits the capabilities of their products. Sandwich man tells me that "High-definition digital video content is restricted to DVD quality on non-HDCP video outputs." Bummer.

"But why?" I ask.
"Because it's more than a run-of-the-mill plasma" he says.
Walking over to the prepared foods area he mumbles that the new plasma displays are powered by Intel's newly announced Viiv multimedia technology as he pretends to re-organize the salads. Picking up a chicken, cherry and walnut salad (my other favorite Wawa item) he mentions that it will run Mac OS 10.4.4 for x86.

Almost dropping my Ken's salad dressing, I exclaim "No way!"
"Way" sandwich man says.

I can tell he's getting nervous telling me so much, especially now that a few of his co-workers notice that he's been talking to me for a while. Nervously he asks me "Would you like me to ring that up for you, sir?" I play along and walk with him over to the register.

"How much will they be?" I ask.
"$25.99 and $32.99" he mutters.
"For a sandwich and a salad?!" I practically yell.
"No. Ahhh, just forget it man" he says in disgust.
"You don't get it, do you?"

Mildly confused I ask him if there's anything else he can spill about the new plasmas. Sandwich Man nervous stuffs a few soft pretzels into my bag and tells me that the new sets will feature built-in Bluetooth and Airport technology. "... and the new 12-button remote with LCD display will blow you away" he says.

"Will it include a keyboard and mouse?" I ask.
Rubbing his thumb and index finger together tells me that these will cost extra, in Sandwich Man code.

Not wanting to wear out my welcome, I thank him and grease him with a little New Year's present (the least I could do). As I walk away he says something really bizarre:

"Hey AirMac, I'll see you on Tuesday!"

Whatever that means...

I love this time of year when the WAWA clerk becomes Deep throat. But that would be pretty cool.

He sure knows how to sell, the sandwich man!..

Ummm... AirMac is what they call Airport in Japan. So - don't quite get the signficance of this hint yet...

Nice way to dance around the edges of something you heard w/o spilling your sources. :-)

First: There's an ad for a free 42 inch plasma TV at the bottom of this article.

Second: What a great way to present rumors. Much more entertaining than the run of the mill, "Apple is going to release a couple plasma TVs with Intel processors and Macie stuff. blah blah".

Third: Nuts. Who wants a TV with built-in obsoleteness? I've had my current TV for 13 years and it works just fine for me. I sometimes connect a Mac to it for a game or downloaded video. What happens when I become addicted to the fancy built-in hardware and in four years is becoming unbearably slow. It would have to be upgradeable. Hmm, even then hmmm. It hmmm. It could be pretty sweet. I'm just thinking that a TV with OS 8 built-in and the right software would still be way better than a dumb TV with no cool software features. Of course I couldn't surf today's Web with it. Flash on a PPC601? OUCH!

This idea has some merit, but it has some serious weaknesses as well. Now if it had an iBook dock...

As long as it's 1080p for use as a Mac monitor (like the cult Westinghouse LVM-37w1), we won't care whether it's plasma vs LCD.

Although the genius bar uses plasma at 1024x768, state-of-the-art has improved since Apple specified these (Hitachi 4000 series?).
Also, how does this all square with the joint
Intel/Apple work on UDI not finished until
spring/summer?

Posted by: retiarius at January 6, 2006 3:15 PM

Well it makes sense, with the added video content to itunes. But I think this will only work if apple builds in a Tivo type service and has an option for adding DirectTV / Dishnetwork / Digital Cable interface.
I guess we will find out on tuesday, but I think it is more likely that the CPU part will stand alone, with the display as an option. It think apple would sell more of those.

Posted by: Greg at January 6, 2006 4:25 PM

I would think you could at least cite the rumormill on the web as your source, it is almost spec for spec, and he beat you to it by about 12 hours -- at a place you are known to frequent.

several posts over last night last good one at 01-05-2006 11:19 PM

Apple is going to further break into the CE space with a large flat-panel/plasma HD display (26"? 37"? 42"?), but with an Apple twist ... a chip (XScale?), Front Row 2.0, wireless capabilities, and an iPod dock. It serves as a living room media hub, and connects to either your iPod (instant music), your computer via your wireless network, or Apple's streaming movie service. No PVR.

IOW, build the media center into the display itself. No boxes to attach. Practically nothing to configure. Plug in, connect to your wireless network (if you have one), and you're good to go.

Yes, basically. The CNT stuff is pretty new, too. Apple has to go with what's proven and cost effective but I've been drooling over SED for a while now. I hope that's what will be used but I haven't been able to pin that one down. I don't even know the speed of the Yonah chip but I'm guessing around 1.8x to 2 GHz. 50" $3299. TS will have next to the last word on the details, also the software and services.

One last post tonight. Mac OS X 10.4.4 AFAIK but could change by then, running on Core Duo Viiv. DVI/HDCP (digital video interface/high definition content protection). Yes, with iSight built-in ala iMac. Front Row 2.0. Wireless goodies like AE, Bt, IR. KB & rodent optional. Built-in speaker system. These are just a few of the basics but there are many more details.

Two sizes, two prices. 42" @ $2,599, 50" @ $3,299 AFAIK. Viiv is a chipset that includes a Yonah Core Duo.

I have no idea when the TS article will be up but I hope it's later today. I'm sure they'll have a lot of stuff I haven't mentioned and may correct some of the stuff I have. They've been confirming and revising the past couple days.

OK, that's it. Beddybye time. 'night all. Sweet dreams.

Posted by: Cody at January 6, 2006 5:48 PM

two hyphenated words: burn-in?
also- even the 23" cinema display is 1920x1200, higher than 1080p requires. as there are no plasma displays on the market that support 1080p, how will apple justify selling displays with equal or lesser pixels than the 20" cinema, while having roughly 4-6 times the surface area? a giant iMac to replace the living room tv sounds like a cool idea, but only seems possible with lcd displays, which, with computer innards, would be prohibitively expensive at this point.

Some guy at a sandwich bar is passing out information is passing out info on sekrit apple products?

From the humorous way you've written this, you obviously realise people will question the credibility of this.

Really, why would anyone think this was for real?

Posted by: Mr eel at January 6, 2006 10:23 PM

If Apple wanted to start selling TVs, its unlikely they'd go back to adding VGA.

Compare the Cinema Displays (now many years old) which NEVER had VGA inputs, to the run of the mill TVs and the kind of displays Dell sells, which have twice as much electronics in them to support analog video inputs and VGA.

Kinda blows the story - I'd edit out the VGA part.

Current iTMS video content on a 42"/50" plasma display? Yeah, that'll look real great. 1080p video content as a download from iTMS? Where's the 25Mbit internet connection that would make that bearable?

Posted by: eff at January 7, 2006 2:51 AM

Hello? People? Wether or not this rumor is true... the story being told is NOT REAL. It is the dispensing of rumors (or perhaps facts) in a way less attackable by corporate lawyers.

Posted by: John at January 7, 2006 4:02 AM

Freshest approach to the otherwise-getting-stale pre Macworld rumor roundup I've seen in a long time. The only thing that scares me is the reaction from ppl who scorn info from Wawa employees. C'mon, people! Try not to be so L I T E R A L with everything you read.

Here's my sandwich filling for the day -
1. Google denies rumours of a Google PC saying they are very satisfied with their existing partners - who they?
2. Larry Page of Google is very cagey on stage at CES about not explicitly denying Google PC/Cube rumours.
3. Google would need a hardware partner for it's Google cube
4. Apple is going to use Intel ViiV technology.
5. Apple has trademarked Vingle which can be read as a concatenation of ViiV, Apple and Google.
6. Conclusion - massive Apple/Google deal to be announced at MacWorld!

Posted by: slabman at January 7, 2006 6:48 AM

Maybe the TV will involve the use of their newly established trademark "Vingle"

Inviserating journalism…

Posted by: bgates at January 7, 2006 2:50 PM

hahaha this got posted on engadget. that's funny.

that would be a pretty cool announcement though... because if apple actually did it, they'd probably do it right. :)

Great, I live in Colorado above 6,000ft. Thanks Apple, here's something else I can't use.

Posted by: prince at January 7, 2006 3:33 PM

this sandwich guy reminds me a lot of the bagel guy in 40 days 40 nights......i really would not know if to belive or not.....the guy is pretty well informed of tech specs and for not being an apple fan....so the chances as all of you know are still 50-50. it sounds good, but it would be something i wouldn't be able to afford for now,.....on the other hand a mac mini just like (media hub) would actually make a lot of sense. and would sell like hot cakes. as the prevous post said....it dose sond apple because it would be an ultimate convergence device. simply plug and play.......simple and easy.....just like macs...so even if it is not true.....it makes sense.

Posted by: jonathan at January 7, 2006 4:54 PM

Do none of you remember Mac the Knife? I always loved his cryptic diatribes. Very well presented, Jason. Hope it's true and turns out as big a hit as the iPod, b/c that would boost Mac marketshare MASSIVELY.

Posted by: Jason Cox at January 7, 2006 5:20 PM

Settle down! The convenience store story was just a fun way of describing the rumor.

Posted by: poophead at January 7, 2006 6:10 PM

Wawa is a good time. Their sandwiches rock. That guy sounds pretty cool.

Posted by: DGMVW at January 7, 2006 6:12 PM

To the people taking the story literally: You're morons.

The idea, whether told to Jason by someone else, or something he just dreamed up, is interesting.

Apple coming out with a plasma display is kind of boring, unless they were to somehow spice it up a bit. A giant iMac, as someone mentioned earlier, is a great idea.

Such a machine would have to include a good-sized drive, and preferably space to include a few more, but that shouldn't be a problem. I'd be willing to add an inch of thickness to my plasma display if it would mean I could just pop off a bezel and add a new drive. Since this thing would basically have the "media center" inside of it, it would have to have a lot of outputs for audio, and a lot of inputs as well, and an iPod dock would be nice.

I think this would mean Apple would have to start offering higher-quality downloads from iTunes. DVD quality would be a minimum, but high definition would be needed eventually. I don't think any of us has the patience or bandwidth for that just yet. Maybe in a few years.

It's an interesting rumor. A *very* interesting rumor. If this pans out, Apple could do for home entertainment what they did for portable music with the iPod.

Dear Diary,
Today I talked to Mummy on the new wall screen. She said she is really enjoying hers. It's great when the whole family gathers around to talk, since we can't visit in person very often.
All the neighbors are dying to get them too. They can't believe how convienient it is to get movies, no more cds to return in the mail.
Today I hooked up a mini cam on the wall opposite the screen and set it up to act as a window when it's not in use.
Well I have more stuff to write but that will have to wait, I have a call...

Posted by: Lumpy Larry Lumpkins at January 7, 2006 6:56 PM

The only problem with having it all in one is that when you want a new computer, you have to buy a whole new TV. Apple could have a mac mini sized box that connects with one cable.

Posted by: dansgil [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 7:44 PM

It's a television.

Posted by: Me at January 7, 2006 7:46 PM

I guess it could make sense. Instead of watching tv on your computer, you could just watch TV on ... TV.

Regarding the Apple/Google rumors, bear in mind that a long-time advisor (since 2001) to Google also happens to sit on the Apple board. His name? Al Gore.

Posted by: Shovelhed at January 9, 2006 2:45 PM

If there is a limit to resolution, the tv won't be very suitable for hdtv watching, will it? That will not be a good idea, at least if they want to sell it as a tv, and not only as a mac with a super screen.
