VMWare for Mac OS X

vmware-logo.gifThe only PC emulators on the Mac (that I know of) are Microsoft Virtual PC (formerly Connectix Virtual PC), and iEmulator. But what about VMWare?

When I enquired about a Mac OS X version of VMware their sales department replied saying that they "do not provide information in advance of an official press release."

If you're interested in such a product I highly suggested that you write an email to sales@vmware.com encouraging them to write a version of VMWare for Mac OS X/Intel.

There is the Guest PC which does the same job of VPC but is less demanding on CPU and a bit faster

You might also be interested in signing the PetitionOnline petition that has been set up to request VMware support on OS X.

I could have swarn that I read somewhere that VMWear was seriously looking in to development for MacTel. That could just be wishful thinking though.

I got so sick of waiting for 'apparently better releases', of seeing PC emulators run somewhere between too slow and far too slow, seeing PC emulators crash for no apparent reason all the time, and not having proper hardware to run on anyway.

If all I need is this weird visual of having a Windows window styles on my Mac, I can just stick a color printout of the Windows XP theme to my monitor ;-) But as far as running software is concerned, I don't know about emulations...

That is why, as the Mac fan that I am, I keep my Macs Windows-software-free, and instead bought myself two affordable PCs with Windows XP and one very powerful PC with Linux, all of which give me no trouble at all, and their price/performance is simply super. They surpass anything you'll ever see emulated on any Mac PowerPC.

Also, on real PCs, you don't waste time trying to 'emulate'. You can just 'run' the stuff! You really can. Highly recommended!

I also have separate machines for Linux and Windows, but I'd still like to run them on my Mac. I've used VirtualPC - agonizingly slow.

I ordered the new Mactel notebook the day they were announced and am hoping that either VMWare or VPC will be ported there and will run well.

VMWare is not an emulator. Its a virtualization technology. The perforamance penalty is generally about 10% but often no OpenGL support.

I do cross platform development and am highly anticipating VMWare/Mactel to put on my MacBook Pro.
