The MacBook Pro Serial Number Code

As I previously reported early MacBook Pro's shipped beginning with serial numbers beginning with W860. We've also determined that Apple changed the logic board to "Revision D" beginning with MacBooks starting with a W8612 serial number. The following is an approximate time line of MacBook Pro serial numbers:

- W8607 - Manufactured: Feb 12-18 - Received: Feb 20 - Initial shipments
- W8610 - Manufactured: March 05-11 - Revision C
- W8612 - Manufactured: March 19-25 - Revision D
- W8613 - Manufactured: March 26-April 01 - Revision D (Thanks Chris)

UPDATE: Here's how to decode your MBP serial number: W8607 means that the unit was manufactured in facility W8 in the 7th week of 2006.

What is your MBP serial number? When did you purchase it? Help your fellow MacBook Pro owners with your info!

mine arrived on April 12th (ordered on April 4th). S/N 8614

I got my first MacBook on April 13 from an Apple Store. The serial number for that one started with W8612. It had issues with heating up. I got it exchanged and the new MacBook also had a serial number starting with W8612 exchanged about 4 days later Apr 17. This one has had no heating issues, but has a noise/whine problem. But otherwise just perfect.

Posted by: Xl at April 20, 2006 10:56 AM

I previously posted (probably the post above this) that there was a noise issue with my W8612 MacBook Pro. I sent the laptop back because it was just too irritating and asked for an exchange. When the exchange was made the Apple store employee told me that he was shipping me a W8615 laptop and that ALL issues had been taken care of on these versions. I still haven't received the laptop (sorry, "portable") but I will let you guys know how it runs when it DOES arrive,

Posted by: Xl at April 30, 2006 2:20 PM

8614 and it works perfectly! (2.16GHz/7200RPM drive).

Posted by: JD at May 3, 2006 12:02 PM

W8607 - works fine. it might have a whine, but it's not very loud and I don't have any comparison.

Posted by: max at May 4, 2006 5:22 AM

I just the W8613. It gets hot, but not as hot as I feared reading the previous comments.
N whining sounds, sometimes I hear the CPU, but that's no issue at all.
I guess I'm lucky.

I got an 8614 yesterday. It would not power up off of the power adaptor period. With NO battery in the machine and the power adaptor connected it simply will not power on, and it will not charge the battery. I have tried friends power adaptors as well. I traded it for an 8617 today, and so far so good.

Quality Control must have gone to hell over in the China plant. I hope these new model hiccups stop soon.

w8618 here, have cpu whine, and also has weird speaker hiss at bootup and wake up

Posted by: Kyle at May 10, 2006 10:04 PM

I've had an W8616 for a couple of days. It gets pretty hot. I could fry an egg above the F keys.

No other problems.

I'm on my second W8614 (1.83GHz,1.5Gb Ram) that has consistant powering up issues and turns itself off frequently. Will have to return again.

Who here like me has found all over the internet and forums problems about the first batch of 15" MacBook Pro's serial W8609 having the following problems:

Overheating to the point its uncomfortable in your lap.
Airport not connecting after awaking from sleep.
Aiport dropping signal.
Screen flickering.

Well according to some sites Apple will take it away and replace/repair it. I was on the phone to Apple for an hour and a half last night, speaking to 4 different departments. None of them new what i was talking about (serial batch order is faulty) They said that anything found on the internet and not on the apple website should be viewed at face value. In the end they offered to pick it up and repair it as its in its first 90 days of warranty. The guy on the phone thinks th Memory Logic Board will be replaced as there is a new version correcting some of these issues. In every case i made it clear what ever the solution was i wanted it sorted super quick as i need it for work. They said that two weeks repair time was standard.

Anyone else having the same problems with their MBP or with Apple?
Remember if your MBP serial number is higher or equal to W8610 then your fine, e.g. W8610, W8611, W8612. As these models have the new logic board.

I'll let you know how long the repair time takes.

Ordered a Macbook Pro on May24th, 2006....15"/Matt/2.16GHz/2GB. Shipped from Shanghai on May 26th, received June 1st. Serial No: W8621.

No high-pitched noises or noticeable problems so far. 1-2mm gap at corners when lid closed. Wouldn't have noticed only for the fact that I've read comments online. Not a problem. Slightly 'hot to touch' over left internal speaker. Again not a problem for me. My first Mac....impressed and happy so far !

mine is w8609, i'm unfortunate enough to get these problems: whine problem, wifi, problem, it gets as hot as hell, and the recent problem was that the battery clearly grow larger than it should b...damn!

I am having trouble with my MacBook Pro Battery Life.
The full charge operation for my MacBook pro has fallen to roughly 2.15 hours....(under Better Battery Life Settings, Bluetooth & wifi turned off).
Serial Number: W860911MVJ3
Battery Serial Number: 6N607HV6U75B
Original Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5500
Current Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5051
Here you would notice that the Battery mAh has fallen from 5500 mAh to 5051 mAh. This explains the loss of battery life.
Also, i experience an irritating hiss noice when connected to AC Power and external speakers. The noise dissapears when AC power is disconnected and the machine runs on battery.

Mine starts with W8623 so I suppose it was made in the 23rd week? No clue what revision that is or how to find out.

I have only noticed one issue with mine (which I find to be so minor that I don't care). Every once in a while when the CPU is idle I can hear the squeeling that people have talked about. But it's very faint and doesn't happen all the time - I think it might only happen when the battery is charging.

Cheers.
P.S. This thing gets just about as hot as any other laptop I've ever used - even less hot than my old IBM P2 333Mhz. Don't see what people have been complaining about.

My Serial number start with W8609

Bought in Japan around April, with 2GB RAM.

Since about a week, my computer suddenly shuts down when running on the battery.

Before, I got 2-3 hours without problems and then it would sleep. Now it just shuts down and I may lose some work if not saved.

I will take it to Apple Store, but dread the fact that I would have to miss my computer for a week or more.

Let me know if anybody with W8609 got a replacement.

Serial number W8625****** purchased online via Apple Education store 2006/07/09, shipped 2006/07/10.

25th week of 2006 means the unit was manufactured in the week of June 18, 2006, a mere three weeks before my purchase.

my serial number starts with W815 and i have the battery problem and many others; it was manufactured in the W8 shanghai factory in april 06 and i bought it may 2nd ... just to let you guys know

Posted by: doris at July 12, 2006 5:00 PM

Serial: W8612
Purchase: Canada
Shipped: Early April

Problem: Before yesterday, it was operating fine, other than the fact that you could melt the polar ice caps with it. Woke up this morning, now the thing will not start... Nothing, notta, ziltch. Cannot perform key command resets on anything. Battery appears fine and fully charged. AC works. Computer is toast.

Just spoke with a colleague who said I have to bring it in. Something about the logicboard getting messed on these.

May none of the rest of you go through this.

W86240 - I have this serial number, and even I am facing the issue of battery failing. My Macbook Pro showed around 2hrs battery and boom, the next minute it was gone!!
