O'Grady's PowerPicks: 11 Must-Have Treo Apps

treo650-bbvfs.jpgMy Treo 650 recently had a meltdown. Someone tried to call me and I couldn't answer the call (buttons didn't work) then it hung on the inbound call screen. After a soft reset it went into a boot loop and needed a hard reset to bring it back. After wiping all my data and apps I decided to selectively re-install just my favorites.

So, following is my list of 10 must-have applications for the palmOne Treo 650:

Standalone - QuickNews, an excellent RSS client loaded with features.
Intellisync - VeriChat, the best IM client for the Treo.
Tiny Stocks - Stock Manager - Keep tabs on your portfolio.
Tiny Stocks - Highway Manager - With gas prices sky high, track your fuel efficiency.
Blue Nomad - BackupBuddyVFS - This one isn't optional, it saved my bacon this week.
ShSh software - TAKEphONE - Makes finding and calling contacts incredibly easy.
ShSh software - 2day - "Today" type application - shows all your calendar and tasks.
ShSh software - 4cast - Displays forecast for the next 5 days.
Electric Pocket - Ringo Pro - Allows you to use MP3 ringtones with the Treo.
Palmary Soft - PalmaryClock Wireless Edition
Concrete Software - Aces Texas Hold'em - No Limit - The best Texas Hold'em poker game available.

Ok, it's actually 11. Shoot me...

Hard restting your Treo, although disruptive, is actually a good thing - provided you have a good backup. It purges a lot of unused and corrupt files clogging your memory and it forces you to re-evaluates what software that you really need on your device.

#12 - VolumeCare

I bought this thing from GoTreoSoftware.com - you won't believe how loud it can make your Treo! I couldn't hear the thing before if I was in a crowded restaurant, and the speakerphone was just about useless unless I was in a silent room. Check this app out. I think I recall it had a free demo version.

I highly recommend the new and free NVBackup instead of BackupBuddy VFS. I'm a paid BackupBuddy user, have been since before VFS even existed, but on my Treo, I've had a number of issues with crashes during backups and restores, and incomplete restorations. NVBackup seems to work much better, so far no complaints at all!

Wow. My must-have Top Ten list doesn't overlap with yours at all! in no particular order:

Snapper -- to access my various POP and IMAP mailboxes

SplashPhoto -- for showing off pictures to friends

SplashShopper -- for remembering books and music and movies I want to buy/watch

Mobipocket -- to read any of a dozen e-books I have on my SD card

Documents -- to open Word and Excel attachments

AIPro -- ditto for opening TIFF attachments (usually faxes)

MegaClock -- to time meetings, and to use as a reliable alarm clock in hotel rooms. I guess this competes with your PalmaryClock, but I've already paid for this one. :-)

MegaL -- if you haven't tried it, you should!

powerONE calculator -- because my brain has been hardwired into RPN for decades and I'm not going to change

UnDupe -- for when syncing Entourage, Apple's Address Book, and the Palm contact list goes wonky

Golly, but people are so different! Since my VisorPhone died after three years of heavy use I haven't upgraded to the Treo but my list of vital apps is pretty much unchanged since my original Palm Professional.

  • PocketChess, a chess program smarter than me
  • Sums, a useful four-column spreadsheet thingy
  • Undupe, for cleaning up the four main Palm DB's
  • Documents to Go, mainly to manage database-style lists in Excel
  • BigClock, a useful timekeeper gizmo
  • Open, a utility for tracking store hours
  • SoftGPS, a joke program that I love
  • Neko, a silly program with a playful cat
  • ScratchPad, a free plaything for entertaining kids in restaurants
I keep meaning to get FileMaker Mobile up and working, but so far it seems like more trouble than it is worth and Sums does well enough that I long ago abandoned Pocket Quicken. The basic text files in NotePad are surprisingly versatile, but then my needs are apparently very primitive.

Directory Assistant should be in the top 5.

Quikipedia is up there with Quicknews from Standalone.

SplashID - Best password vault because of Mac and Windows client support.

Actually, I think the best Poker game for the Treo is Multiplayer Championship Poker by Real Dice.

Looks better then Aces, sits 10 people around a table (like in real life) and has online multiplayer. The last point is really the key. Who cares how good the AI is, it isn't like playing against real people.

The Real Dice game has users online 24/7 and I'll take real human interaction over a simulation anyday.

My 2 cents...
