MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo Users Report Flickering Displays/Distortion
MacFixIt.com has reports in regarding the emergence of flickering displays and the appearance of horizontal distortion lines in the late 2006 model of the MacBook Pro.
The issue, which is similar to a problem that occurred in some of the iBook G4 laptops. Apple seems to be replacing the logic board as a fix, albeit a parts shortage problem may led to delays. The issue doesn't seem to be related to any problems with the display components themselves, but seems isolated to the logic board.
If you've experienced this problem or have any workarounds or ideas, post them as comments.

My 3 day old Core 2 Duo MBP 17" had a harddrive failure that I couldn't fix or rescue any data from the drive. The Apple store replaced it but I did lose valuable data.

I've got one of the first of the Core 2's and the screen goes all batty about once a day. Called Apple when it first happened and they thought it was my external monitor. Putting the computer to sleep seems to stop it, and the recent update has been no help.
Guess I'll be visiting the Apple Store soon.

I have an original MBP and this was the case, as well as my 867G4 PB. It's a bad graphics processor or VRAM. Basically as the unit heats up, the graphics chip begins to error horrifically. Logic Board replacements fixed it both in my cases.
****The PowerBook G4 had one month of AppleCare left. The cost of this repair would have made me bankrupt. Instead I got another 6 months out of the machine and then sold it and got my MBP. The moral of this story? BUY APPLECARE!!!!!

My MBP had similar issues. it was using an external monitor as well as the built in display. suddenly the built-in display began flickering - completely distorted horizontal video - while the secondary display continued working properly. i restarted the machine and everything came up fine.

I received my Macbook Pro Core 2 duo 1 week ago and it shows no signs on any problems. I am a little worried now, but will keep an eye out. The jpg and video on the Macfixit site did not work, so I am not sure what to look for.

I had this problem for about 3 weeks and then it went away. Very very wierd. I live in constant fear of its return. Most of the flickering occured when the screen went to half-bright (i.e. powersaving) before it would go all black (sleeping)

Same here. I bought my core 2 duo mac book pro 1 week ago and I've been having this horizontal lines/flickering screen problem . For the moment it just occurs when I'm using an external display in dual screen mode. I have to put the computer to sleep to go back to normal.
