New Sony MP3 Player NW-A1200 Ready for US Market
29 June 2006 10:43 EST

The 8GB Hard Drive Walkman MP3 Player NW-A1200 priced at $199.95 is ready for pre-order. Expected ship date is around the July 20th. At this price for 8GB - it may be a better deal than a nano!

In addition to the cool organic form factor (available in blue or pink) the display really catches my eye. It's a 1.5 display that seems to float above the surface.

Check out the specs here.

Apple to Brief Media on Thursday 18 May 2006
15 May 2006 09:27 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

Apple Insider is reporting that Apple will be holding a "special briefing" in Manhattan, NY for analysts and members of the media on Thursday, 18 May 2006 at 10 a.m. ET.

In the invites to the event, Apple welcomed analysts and members of the media to preview the new flagship retail location ahead of its Friday evening grand opening, but did not hint at any product introductions.

19 May 2006 is the grand opening for Apple's new flagship retail store on 5th Avenue in New York. Some are speculating that Apple will release the new MacBook (and possibly an iPod) at the event but that has not been confirmed.

PBFixIt Changes Name to iFixIt
10 February 2006 12:02 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

PB FixIt, maker of the revolutionary Fixit Guide series, has changed their name to iFixit.

Explaining the move, iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens said, "Why are we changing names? A few reasons. The first: iFixit sounds cooler. Secondly, Apple is discontinuing the PowerBook name and we want to stay relevant to all Mac owners. But most important, we want to keep our options open. Our team is working incredibly hard to improve our product line and develop the Fixit Guide series."

iFixit's revolutionary do-it-yourself laptop repair manuals, the Fixit Guide Series, will continue to be free online at www.iFixit.com/Guide.

iFixit also announced the expansion of its online products. "I'm proud to announce that we have over 600 different Mac parts and upgrades in-stock and ready to ship. We couldn't be more excited about our market position," said Kyle Wiens.

If you need to take apart a PowerBook, say to upgrade a hard drive or something, you really should download one of their FixIt guides. They're free and available for the following computers:

- Mac Mini
- PowerBook G3 (233 - 500 MHz)
- iBook G3 (300 - 900 MHz)
- iBook G4 (800 MHz - 1.42 GHz)
- PowerBook G4 Titanium (400 MHz - 1 GHz)
- PowerBook G4 Aluminum (867 MHz - 1.67 GHz)

PowerPage Forums Open for Business
10 January 2006 11:30 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

The PowerPage Forums are open for business today and provide a place for mobile technologists to discuss everything related to Apple's mobile products: PowerBooks, iBooks, iPods and just about anything else. There's even a dedicated forum to discuss everything going on at Macworld Expo San Francisco 2006.

Got an old PowerBook or some Mac parts sitting in your basement or garage that you want to get rid of? Who doesn't! If you don't have the time to cobble together an eBay auction post them in the Swap Meet Forum and find them a home.

Have you had your Mac gear stolen? Post the serial number(s) in the Stolen PowerBook Registry Forum so that someone doesn't buy your gear from a shady criminal.

So hurry up and register your preferred user name before they're all gone. See you there.

The Apple Core: Another week another Apple announcement
17 October 2005 10:51 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

Macworld is reporting that Apple's media event on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 will be to unveil "Apple’s latest pro innovations" but what does that mean? It could mean that Apple will round out their hardware offerings and announce upgraded PowerMacs and PowerBooks (the conventional wisdom) but the locale is suspicious.

New PowerBooks and PowerMacs on Oct 19?
15 October 2005 03:30 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

According to MacCentral Apple is having another media event on October the 19th (next Wednesday). The invitation asks to join them as “we unveil Apple’s latest pro innovations.” This is Apple's third press event in five weeks.

Conventional wisdom indicates that new dual or quad-core PowerMacs and Speed-bumped PowerBook G4s (both "pro" products) will be announced.

The new PowerBooks should ship with the Freescale MPC7448 processor which has double the level 2 backside cache (1MB) of the 7447A chip (512k) found in current PowerBooks. PowerBooks could weigh in at 1.7 - 2.0GHz and will probably also pick up Dual-layer Superdrives. High-Def displays are a toss up...

I'm still pulling for the PowerBook nano.

Apple Shares Fall After Earnings Report
11 October 2005 11:37 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Apple Computer Inc. shares lost more than 10% of their value after the closing bell Tuesday after the company's revenue failed to meet analyst expectations, while Advanced Micro Devices Inc. shares lost ground despite the company's surging profits.

The Nasdaq-100 After Hours Indicator, which tracks the evening action of the technology-heavy index's leading shares, was down 7.9 points to 1,531.40.

Shares of Apple Computer fell to $46.05 in late trading after reporting a fourth-quarter profit of $430 million, or 50 cents a share. Excluding a 12- cents-a-share tax benefit, the company earned 38 cents a share to beat estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call, who forecast a profit of 37 cents a share.

However, Apple's revenue of $3.68 billion was shy of analysts' $3.74 billion average estimate.

Shares of PortalPlayer, which supplies components for Apple's market- leading iPod music players, shed 9% to $23.90 following Apple's earnings results.

Welcome to PowerPage 10.0
11 October 2005 11:01 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

Welcome to the new PowerPage layout. First, I need to make the obligatory disclaimers that nothing works. Seriously, just about everything is being worked on as we speak and features will magically begin to roll out in the coming days. I'm happy to be live with the new design (Thanks Jimi!) in time for the Apple announcements tomorrow morning and in advance of our 10th year anniversay in Decemeber. Ammad also deserves an extra thanks for pulling everything together at the last minute.

So sit back and enjoy the ride, I hope that we can enjoy it with you for another 10 years to come.

-Jason

Site News: PowerPage Server Move Time!
29 September 2005 10:00 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

The changing of the season from Summer to Fall can only mean one thing. That's right! It's time for a server move. We moved the PowerPage server to a fatty 64-bit Linux box this week and things are still a bit messy. Turns out that the switch from 32-bit to 64-bit is not trivial and is taking a bit longer than expected. Some notes:

- DNS hasn't replicated around the planet yet, so if you're having trouble reaching the PowerPage, try: http://www.powerpage.org/ (remove everything after the .org/ if you're using a bookmark) or you can dial up our temporary address: http://newton.ctyme.com:6001 which will go away in a few days.

- If you're behind a corporate firewall you may be unable to reach port 6001, so stick to RSS for now until DNS propagates worldwide - which may take another day or two.

- We're eventually moving from Web Objects to Movable Type (MT) and we're looking for a MT consultant or guru to help. If that's you contact us with some references. This is a paid position.

Thank you for sticking with us during the change, we're looking forward to providing a better, more reliable PowerPage in the weeks and months to come.

WWDC 2005 Details Posted, PowerBook G5 Announcement Possible
17 February 2005 11:41 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

WWDC 2002Apple has posted information about the 2005 WorldWide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco:

With its unique integration of breakthrough technologies, open standards, and robust development tools, Mac OS X Tiger is the platform for unparalleled developer innovation. At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2005, June 6-10 in San Francisco, you'll get the in-depth knowledge, hands-on instruction and one-on-one support you need to deliver products and solutions that transform the way your users work, play, search, and share on a Mac.
Although Apple has stated that "no hardware announcements are made at WWDC," they broke that rule in 2004 by announcing the 30-inch Cinema Display, in 2003 Apple announced the PowerMac G5 and the iSight camera at WWDC. In 2002 Steve-O announced that OS 9 was dead while displaying a graphic of a cool headstone (picture courtesy of MacDevCenter).

The PowerPage believes that we could see the PowerBook G5 announcement at WWDC 2005 and possibly even Apple's forthcoming breakout box for GarageBand (GASP!) code-named "Asteroid."

Mac mini for me and you

The new Mac mini. It just had to be more than a cheap headless desktop computer, but it is far less. It?s a laptop without a screen or keyboard or battery. It?s an external drive with a computer squeezed in. Cheap PCs are mostly towers, generic boxes that can be added to, but are largely hollow, empty and without style. They are desktop behemoths with no guts. The Mac mini is flexible because it is small. read on......

Forbes: 'Apple Bites The Fans That Feed It'
07 January 2005 05:04 EST

Forbes' Lisa DiCarlo wrote an interesting piece about Apple's new strategy for 2005 to litigate its best customers. Specifically, she delves into Apple's suit against ThinkSecret.com.

Make no mistake, there's a good chance that the source of ThinkSecret's story about plans for a $500 Mac and new business software did break whatever legal agreement not to divulge the information that they had agreed to with Apple. And, one must assume it is at least partly true, or Apple wouldn't bother suing.
