Mac Mini Installed in a Toyota Prius
21 June 2006 10:37 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

macprius.jpgJeremy Kusnetz has installed a Mac mini in his Toyota Prius and even hacked the touch screen to work with Front Row. Very impressive, my man!

The quest to make Mac Prius.

The first thing I needed was video in. There are a number of options here, I decided to go with the CAN-view for a number of reasons, it takes RGB in opposed to other options that are either only composite video or s-video. Also the CAN-view has a serial out which I had hoped to be able to use to read touch screen coordinates, and maybe eventually take the other CAN data to build an interface showing different car statistics.

Big Monitor (Updated)
15 March 2006 07:59 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

I mean REALLY big monitor.

big-monitor.jpg

I just plugged my new Mac mini in to the digital input on the back of my TV. I need to do some tweeking to the settings on the TV to get the picture really crisp, but it's pretty encouraging that it just works right out of the box. I did have to make one change in the display settings on the computer (turned off overscanning or something). One more thing: Front Row looks SICK on the big screen. Good bye Windows Media Center! Mac mini Pr0n
03 March 2006 01:14 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

mini-innerds.jpgSo you're a fan of computer guts, eh? So am I. Macworld has posted some of the first nude pictures (pictured) of the new Intel-packing Mac mini.

We've got two large heat sinks (F) (one for processor, one presumably for video circuitry). There's a little perch (G) at the back for the new "penthouse" on port row, belonging to the audio-in and -out ports. Just below the interconnect slot (H) is the built-in AirPort Extreme card (J) (you can see the antenna snake off to the right). At the front left you can make out the two RAM slots (K), one on top of the other. SODIMMs slide right into here, laying on their side. It's a tight squeeze, but SODIMMS like to snuggle, so it's okay.

Some things worth noting about the new mini: the video card (Intel GMA950) shares memory with the CPU, the Intel CPU chip is socketed (unlike the MacBook Pro and the iMac) meaning it might be able to be upgraded and the SO-DIMMS are very difficult to get at and subsequently upgrade.

In related news the Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66Ghz benchmarks OpenGL at over 2x faster than the Mac mini G4 it replaces.

I just ran XBench on my new stock standard Core Duo Mac Mini and uploaded the stats to XBench. The new model destroys the old one, and OpenGL performance is over 2x better than the G4 Mac Mini. Maybe the Intel GMA950 Is not so bad? 1080P trailers from trailers.apple.com run without dropping any frames also.

mini Blockbuster
16 December 2005 08:44 EST

mac-mini-200.jpgBlockbuster, Hollywood Video, Netflix, GreenCine, whatever the movie rental competition, I predict that Apple will eventually challenge these services. The Video iPod and iMac G5 were just testing the waters. The iPod screen is tiny and the iMac, even with the biggest screen is too small to be a home entertainment system. I wouldn't have predicted it would start by selling TV episodes, but at some point Apple will need to rent feature length films at HD quality.

The Mac mini is the real deal. The size is right and video via Apple is poised to be the next big thing. The next mini is going to have to be a digital video recorder capable of decoding surround sound right out of the box. Think Secret is saying that video will reside on the user's iDisk and never reside on the computer. I don't think streaming feature length films or HD content can work that way any time soon, but I can envision a number of solutions that are far more robust than the DRM used to lock iTunes songs.

AOpen mini a Dead Ringer for the Mac mini
12 December 2005 01:25 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

aopen-mini.jpgMacMiniColo submits this perfect example of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. In this case, AOpen practically cloned the form factor of the Mac mini - hell, they even completely ripped of the mini's packaging. Should AOpen get a nasty Christmas card from the new, omnipotent Apple legal department? Or did they just coincidentally release a machine that resembles the mini? (Jobs to lawyers: "release the hounds!")

I have good buddy who imports whoopie cushions, ab-burners and the cigarette lighters from China by the ship load. He explained to me "There is no copying in China. There is just very close, intense study of the things that are successful in the marketplace." ....

We just got our hands on the AOpen mini PC, which bears a striking resemblance to the Mac mini.

A few hours playing with it under XP shows it to be a good little unit. Its a tad noisier and warmer than it the Mac mini, but all in all a good little unit. (Except it runs XP or Linux rather than OS X).

More side-by-side pictures of the *ahem* gross infringement at MacMiniColo.

Mac mini Needs a Front Row

After watching Tuesday's festivities one of the coolest things I took away from the Steve's presentation was Apple's innovative Front Row remote control which turns any Mac into a media center—as long as it's a new iMac, that is. Read More at The Apple Core...

Apple Quietly Updating the Mac mini?
29 September 2005 10:12 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

Mac miniOn 27 September 2005 AppleInsider posted a story about Apple quietly prepping an update to the Mac mini lineup. According to AI the new minis will jump to 1.33 and 1.5GHz with 5400RPM hard drives and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. The 1.5GHz model will get a 64MB ATI Radeon 9200.

DoubleB found some screen shots from someone who purportedly got a 1.5GHz Mac mini by accident.
