iBook Battery Catches Fire
05 June 2006 09:23 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

iBookFire.jpgSince notebook battery issues are near and dear to my heart I was intrigued by this story about an iBook catching fire. While it's clearly an isolated incident, TUAW wins the award for finding the most sensational picture of the iBook actually burning. Yes, even more sensational than the picture of the roasted MagSafe adapter. You know that Apple PR is having nightmares about this one...

We hear about the occasional battery recall, and there are always the complaints that computers are getting too hot, but things went to a whole new level for a family in Minnesota. As WCCO in the Twin Cities reports, an 11 year-old boy set a running iBook down on the carpet and left the room. His mother states that they heard a popping noise, saw that the iBook had started melting the carpet and the room was filling with smoke. They quickly carried the iBook outside and remembered to bring their camera along for the show as the iBook, you can see, literally caught fire (WCCO has a video and more images).

Repairing an iBook G3 GPU failure
24 April 2006 08:15 EST
PowerPage Contributor

ibook_screen.jpgMacBook-fr.com has published an article about repairing an G3 iBook Dual USB video failure. The Apple Repair Extension Program is now up, so the only solution for having such an iBook to work is the "DIY" solution. One of our forums' moderator, Pacis, has found a solution that solve this issue. It's not expensive and it's not hard to do.

"MacBook" to Replace iBook name?
26 February 2006 09:54 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

A PowerPage reader writes:

Our Apple Rep was here (University deleted) on Friday, and slipped up a bit... He said: "You know that Steve's putting iSight cameras in everything. The MacBook will have it. (Short pause, while he quickly looks at his feet. Then he looks up and resumes.) The MacBook Pro has it now."

From previous rumors it sounds like the new MacBook will ship in a single 13.3-inch widescreen form-factor with a single core Intel Core Solo processor. A machine targeted at the educational market would have to be announced in March and ship in April or risk missing the critical back-to-school buying window for most schools in the United States.

I've heard some rumbling that Apple may drop FireWire from the MacBook in an effort to trim costs and to further differentiate the MacBook Pro. Apple can't drop FireWire from the MacBook unless they add an ExpressCard/34 slot which would allow you to add FireWire via an expansion card. iMovie HD features FireWire importing and has long been bundled with consumer Macs. It would be difficult for Apple to ship a notebook without some way to connect to FireWire devices.

Apple's holding a special media event tomorrow (28 Feb) in Cupertino and there's a 50/50 chance that they'll launch the MacBook then.

What do you think of the name "MacBook?"

More on the Intel Core Solo-Powered iBook
30 January 2006 12:00 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

iMacBook.jpgAppleInsider posted a juicy article on Friday with information on the new Intel Core Solo-powered iBook replacement. In addition to being reduced to a single 13.3-inch widescreen form factor and possibly shipping in both black and white AI adds some configuration details.

Although Apple has reportedly decided to base the new series of iBooks around a single enclosure and display size, it's still expected that the laptops will arrive in at least two retail configurations -- one with a SuperDrive and the other without. The latter model will fall within the sub-$1000 range currently occupied by the 12-inch PowerPC-based 1.33GHz iBook. All configurations will include an infrared sensor in the front of the laptop capable of communicating with the Apple Remote. This will allow users to control the included Front Row software on their iBook from up to 30 feet away.

The real question is what are they going to name it? My guess is that it'll be the iMacBook. All the professional Macs will be called Macs (like the MacBook Pro) and the consumer machines will be called iMacs (hence the iMacBook). Any thoughts? Post them in the comments below.

iMacBook Mockup
30 January 2006 12:00 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

iMacBook.jpgA Flickr user who goes by the name troelsbay has posted one of the best mockups yet of the presumably-forthcoming 13.3-inch widescreen iMacBooks (ny name) based on the Intel Core Solo processor. Remember kids, it's only a mockup.

I made this today by tweaking and manipulating current iBook material. It's a 13.3" MacBook, it's thinner than the current 12", widescreen, with iSight and frontrow-support (IR). The mockup is based on the Appleinsider rumor.

13.3-Inch Widescreen Intel iBook
13 December 2005 07:46 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

ThinkSecret is reporting that Apple plans to shuffle the screen sizes of the iBook lineup when they release the first Intel portable at Macworld Expo next month in San Francisco. According to TS Apple will replace the 14-inch iBook with a 13.3-inch widescreen model sporting "WXGA resolution of 1280x720, serving up about 15 percent more pixels than the current 14.1-inch model." TS goes on to say that the 12-inch iBook may be in the process of being phased out. As I reported on my ZDNet blog, sources tell me that Apple is phasing out Firewire from the iBooks as a way to keep costs down and to further differentiate the PowerBook as the professional-level Apple portable.

Turn an iBook 12" Into a PowerBook 12" (Updated)
10 November 2005 09:43 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

ibook-g4.jpgA story at HardMac details how to turn an iBook 12-inch into a PowerBook 12-inch.

The iBook 12" is an excellent compromise between mobility, robustness, performance and price. It can also be transformed to become a strong competitor for its brother, the PowerBook 12". However, it is impossible to equip the iBook 12" as a PowerBook 12" via the BTO from the Apple Store. So, it can be tempting to buy a basic iBook 12" model and upgrade it yourself into a highly performing mobile computer. This article is intended to provide you help to perform such transformation. This transformation is not a "piece of cake", and requires skills, knowledge and tools.

After the above modifications the only real difference between the iBook and the PowerBook is monitor spanning—which isn't available on the iBook. You'll need a separate hack to enable that. Screen Spanning Doctor allows you to use an extended desktop with your iBook, iMac or eMac and has been updated to support Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger), the new iMac G5 and the October 2005 iBooks.

Counter-Point: TUAW reports that upgrading an iBook G4 is actually cheaper at the Apple Store.

iBooks Making Inroads at More Schools
23 March 2004 04:55 EST

Two interesting stories have surfaced about the adoption of iBooks in more schools:

Arizona high school may adopt iBook program - A new Vail District High School in Arizona is considering replacing textbooks with iBooks in an effort to better cater to state curriculum and test mandates, according to the Arizona Daily Star. The school's 350 students and 50 teachers would each be equipped with an iBook, which the district would purchase at the reduced price of $600 a piece. The Vail District is one of four or five districts in the state expected to receive funding for laptop programs. Click through for a the link at MacNN.

Maine private school negotiating $3m iBook deal - Saco, Maine private high school Thornton Academy is negotiating a US$3 million deal to bring iBooks into the fold, according to a report from the Portland Press Herald. The plan is set to go into motion next fall.

Public school students in seventh and eighth grades throughout Maine have iBooks. The computers have generally been well received by students, teachers and parents alike, despite the cost and the state's budgetary restrictions -- so much so that some are discussing the possibility of expanding the program to the state's high school students. More story and a link at MacCentral.

Apple Releases G4 iBooks
22 October 2003 08:23 EST

Apple released three G4-powered iBooks today. The 12-inch iBook G4 ships with an 800MHz processor (US$1099), and the 14-inch iBook G4 in either 933MHz (US$1299) or 1GHz (US$1499) flavors. All ship with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 GPU, combo drives and Mac OS 10.3 Panther. The 12-inch model is supposed to be shipping today. More details are on Apple.com.

Can the PowerBook G5 be far behind? Sources say yes, the PBG5 is at least a year away. A dual-processor PBG4 will come first, possibly next spring or summer.

Dashboard Mounted iBook
08 October 2003 10:31 EST

Our friends at Gizmodo found this killer dash-mounted iBook:

In the spirit of that dashboard mounted Tablet PC we wrote about a few weeks ago, one reader writes in with his glowing car-mounted Apple iBook, which he's tricked out with GPS, WiFi for wardriving, radar detection, a rear view USB camera with infrared (so he can see what's behind him, even in the dark), and of course, to listen to MP3s with.
My favorite line "Everyone including cops wonder if you are a cop. It means less tailgating, no tickets... less trouble."
