Rumors of Apple/TiVo Partnership Abound
07 December 2006 09:50 EST
Chris Barylick

Apple and TiVo

With Macworld Expo San Francisco on the horizon, the rumors abound.

The latest one according to an article on techcrunch.com centers around the possibility of Steve Jobs announcing a partnership at the upcoming show.

Albeit rumors usually spawn around this time, there is some credibility to the notion of a partnership, especially with Apple's iTV product in the works. An article over on PVRWire agrees with the idea of the partnership and/or licensing deal, but also cites that Apple and TiVo embody different goals as well as work styles.

The joint effort may be mutually beneficial in that TiVo still has a strong brand name in the PVR world, but faces the reality of declining sales and increased competition while Apple's connections to online video and retail through the iTunes Store could help the firm. Despite this strength, Apple remains new, untested and unproven in the television markets.

If you have any ideas, suggestions or comments regarding this, let us know.

iPhone Expected to Include Clickwheel
07 December 2006 06:57 EST
Chris Barylick

With the iPhone on the way, Apple is expected to include its standard clickwheel found in several of its iPods into the device according to a report by MYiPhone.com.

The article, which cites analyst Jesse Tortora, mentions the importance of music to the device and believes that the iPhone should be considered a music player complete with phone capabilities rather than the reverse.

The first iPhone is expected to feature a camera and two batteries (one powering the cell phone capabilities, the other the music player's) but lack Wi-Fi, video functions, a standard QWERTY keyboard and a larger OLED display. Said features are expected to appear in a second generation - around the third or fourth quarters of 2007.

If you have any ideas or comments about this, let us know.

Digg's Kevin Rose Leaks Possible iPhone Details
04 December 2006 07:48 EST
Chris Barylick

Kevin Rose, founder of digg.com, leaked a slew of exciting details regarding the possibility of Apple's upcoming cell phone, or "iPhone" in a recent digg.com vidcast, according to MacWorld UK.

Keeping in mind that this is still rumor and speculation despite the anticipation that greets a potential phone with Macworld Expo San Francisco on the horizon next month, there remain some cool new possibilities released about the device:

-The new device has been described to be as "small as s*it".

-The new device is expected to run a "mini version of OS X."

-The new device will ship in two memory capacities, a 4 GB and an 8 GB model expected to be priced at $249 and $449 respectively. The unit is expected to be based on Flash memory.

-The device is expected to support the major network standards and be without individual/provider network ties.

-The device is expected to support SIM card support as well as feature a cool slide-out keyboard and touch screen.

-Finally, the device is expected to support two batteries, one powering the phone functions while the other supports the music-playback/iPod elements. The two batteries will be powered by a single charger.

The full video clip can be seen here, albeit NOT SAFE FOR WORK due to casual swearing and Kevin Rose enjoying a beer as he lays out the rumor's details:

The speculation of a long-awaited device continues, albeit I'd like to see what Apple could do with a tablet device come the new year.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please let us know.

Apple Files Patent for Possible iPhone?
01 December 2006 08:18 EST
Chris Barylick

A recently filed patent by Apple Computer reported by Macworld has pointed to a possible mobile phone device, or long-awaited "iPhone", that could serve as the next generation of the iPod as well as allow the company to branch off into new markets.

According to a report on Bloomberg.com, the patent describes a "tube-like" device containing zirconia and alumina that would be "cost effective, smaller, lighter, stronger and aesthetically more pleasing than current" designs.

The introduction of the patent is sensible, especially with Macworld Expo just around the corner in San Francisco in little more than a month. The iPhone would face considerable competition from new generations of cell phones capable of increased functionality as MP3 players as well as PDA-like devices.

Speculation for an "iPhone" device has been a favorite topic of many Mac users, many of them wishing to see Apple improve where current cell phone manufacturers fall short.

A short but popular concept video by award winning filmmaker Christopher DeSantis details what a potential iPhone, or "iTalk", might be like in terms of form, function and appearance.

Odds are the actual Apple phone wouldn't float.

MacBook nano in January?
15 June 2006 11:30 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

I've been calling for a MacBook nano for a while now and evidence is mounting that Apple is working on such a beast. Although there are many counter points to the argument (no optical drive?) an ultra-notebook/tablet could fill the hole left by the PowerBook 12-inch quite nicely.

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple is working on an Ultra Portable Mac based on flash memory:

Apple Computer could introduce an "ultra-portable PC" that employs NAND-based flash memory in time for the January Macworld trade show in San Francisco, one Wall Street analyst says. UBS Investment Research analyst Ben Reitzes said this week his proprietary checks indicate Apple is working on "ultra-portable PCs" and even notebooks equipped with NAND flash memory in order to speed up boot times.

"We believe these new products could start in notebook products with combo-drives (NAND and HDD) or ultra-portables (NAND only), and could be released in time for MacWorld," Reitzes told clients.

AppleInsider | Apple seen delivering "ultra-portable" at Macworld

Now that Apple took my advice and killed the term PowerBook, what will the Ultra Portable Mac be called? I need names here people - NAMES!

Mobile Me Conspiracy Theory Number 1
22 January 2006 12:12 EST
R. Emory Lundberg, Assoc. Editor

Okay don't get excited.

A user on HowardForums had an Area Information message pop up on his GSM mobile phone while walking around San Francisco that identified itself as Apple District.

While this isn't uncommon in other parts of the world, I have never once in the United States gotten an Area Info message on any of the channels of my mobile phone. So that in and of itself is interesting, but like the original poster points out, this could perhaps be related to a pilot of Mobile Me, whatever the heck that is.

Have any readers in San Francisco recieved an Area Info message with that designation? Where were you? I invite you to follow along with the discussion on Howard Forums or in the comments here. This could be quite a fun little caper.

Apple iBox: PVR or Hoax
06 January 2004 09:33 EST

According to MacOSX.com Apple is working on a TiVo-like Personal Video Recorder (PVR) that could be announced today at Macworld Expo SF 2004.

We just recently received information from a alleged member of a testing program at Apple saying "The iBox plugs into your TV and acts as a hub for your digital devices and computers...The iBox has a small, sleek encasement that is about 10 inches long, 6 inches wide and 1 - 1 1/2 inches thick. Its case is made of the same material found on the G5, even sports the same grey logo on the top. The front, or face, of the iBox is pearl white, similar to an iPod."

Does this look like a coincidence? We don't think so!

Thursday night, the Apple Store briefly posts specifications of an unreleased PowerMac G5.

Saturday afternoon, reports of a job opening at Apple emerge.

Sunday, Joy of Tech already pokes fun of the goof.

Tune in to the PowerPage on Monday morning at 10 AM PDT for our live coverage of Steve Jobs' keynote address from the WWDC in San Francisco.

Apple Leaks G5 Specs (Updated)
19 June 2003 11:12 EST

Update: the image link is still working, but it shows current specs instead of apparent "future specs." By Monday we'll know if this was a genuine slip-up or an internal hoax -- either way, someone's head is rolling. Unless it was intentional misinformation. (Don't think so.)

Apple seems to have inadvertently posted specs for upcoming Power Mac G5 models, both MacMinute and MacNN are reporting. (MacNN's site was choking at midnight Eastern, apparently due to the news.)

In a bullet list on the store (link was working at presstime), Apple revealed the following specifications:

The world's fastest personal computer

1.6GHz, 1.8GHz or Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 processors

Up to 1 GHz processor bus

Up to 8GB of DDR SDRAM

Fast Serial ATA hard drives

AGP 8X Pro graphics options from NVIDIA or ATI

Three PCI or PCI-X expansion slots

Three USB 2.0 ports

One FireWire 800, two FireWire 400 ports

Bluetooth & AirPort Extreme ready

Optical and analog audio in and out

The 1GHz processor bus would be a particularly major jump. Notice that the text reads "personal computer" so these are not apparently XServe specs. In fact, the specs

are so good one has to wonder if this isn't a hoax. Keeping our fingers crossed and waiting until Monday -- this should boost Keynote-watching ratings. (Our updated guide to where to watch will be posted tomorrow morning.)

WWDC: All About the Software
19 June 2003 04:22 EST

Daniel Eran Dilger writes, "I've written an article entitled "What to expect at WWDC 2003" that describes some of the new technologies Apple will be announcing later this month." Dan's article spotlights likely technology in Panther including overhauled QuickTime architecture with more multithreading and conferencing and collaboration tools, better Directory Services with improvements to Mail, Address Book, and iSync (finally!), a new open file system, graphical remote login, and much more. It's all music to our ears. Unless you're doing 3D rendering work, Apple's bread and butter runs really fast on its latest hardware, but everyone can benefit from under-the-hood improvements. If Apple really is doing this much to OS X's guts, we'll celebrate, and hopefully wild hardware rumors won't steal the thunder from X.

Best Buy and Apple Back in Talks
12 June 2003 10:01 EST

Patrick Murphy points us to this ThinkSecret story which suggests Apple and Best Buy are still in talks to restore Apple products to the retailer's stores. The upside: Apple staff could be employed, as in CompUSA stores, to make sure Apples actually get sold. But as Patrick says, "This is like one of those abusive relationships that just never quits. And I suspect it'll be a notable exception to the rule quoted in "Roger Dodger" - that break-up sex is always disappointing, but getting-back-together sex is fabulous."
