MiniBatteryLogger Tracks Battery Activities
08 December 2006 08:15 EST
Chris Barylick

Claudio Procida has today released version 1.5.2 of MiniBatteryLogger, a $15 shareware application that allows the user to view battery data such as charge and amperage over time as well as the ability to track this data via customizable colors and indicators for power events, such as surges and drains. Stored data is saved to a log file which tracks time and event occurrence while the program makes sense of this by creating charts, graphs and easy visual markers to follow.

Like other battery tracking programs, MiniBatteryLogger also shares details about your battery's charge, actual, maximum and original capacities, amperage, voltage, cycle count, and estimated times to complete refill and discharge a battery.

The program is also compatible with the uber-cool Growl system notification program and can alert users via this application.

MiniBatteryLogger is a 2.6 megabyte download and requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later to run. The program is written as a Universal Binary and runs cleanly on both the PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.

Thin Client Technologies En Route for Mac OS X 10.5
06 December 2006 09:37 EST
Chris Barylick

Although Apple's reported iPhone has snagged an incredible amount of attention in recent weeks, a slew of new technologies appear to be en route to Mac OS X 10.5 according to a report by Macworld UK.

Thin client technologies generally center around a larger host and save data remotely to hard drives and online services.

Reported new features in iCal and new capacities within recent and upcoming builds of Mac OS X Server point toward devices like the iPhone and others that can integrate between Mac OS X and the Macintosh platform, according to a recent report by AppleInsider.

The report cites that Apple has demonstrated some of the new integration features to some parties, the features relying on an unreleased version of .Mac. These features include the ability to beam contacts, remotely control and gain access to calendars and appointment schedules, the Mac acting as a hub of sorts while sending data to a consolidated center where other computers can access it upon logging in from other locations.

If you have any ideas, suggestions or comments about this, let us know.

iCyclone Allows Users to Set Custom Fan Speeds
04 December 2006 07:29 EST
Chris Barylick

Kkillian has released iCyclone, an open source donation-ware program that allows users to manually set the minimum speeds of built-in fans for Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro Intel-based laptops.

The program allows a custom spin rate to be set as well as an optimal rate to be found automatically while not spinning below the hardware's recommended specifications in order to protect the hardware.

iCyclone's source code is available for download while the program itself is a quick 544 kilobyte download from the uber-useful MacUpdate.com.

The program is available for free albeit the author asks for the occasional donation via Paypal.

iCyclone requires an Intel-based MacBook or MacBook Pro laptop and Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run.

CoolBook Bug Update Fixes CPU Setting Issue
21 November 2006 10:55 EST
Chris Barylick

Shareware author Magnus Lundholm has updated his program, CoolBook, a $10 application which allows the user to adjust the clock speed and voltage of Intel Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors.

A bug which was discovered and has been corrected in the latest version of the program, prevents the CPU from running at the user-configured performance mode when the laptop is running solely from a power adapter without a battery installed.

Lundholm also suggests that CoolBook users can quit the installer once it's finished its task, then open CoolBook and enter preferred settings for the battery and power adapter modes before restarting.

Although the Intel Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors are renowned for running at much cooler temperatures than their G4 predecessors, Lundholm's published benchmarks have recorded temperature decreases by as much as 14°C (25.2° F).

MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.1 Proves Troublesome for Users
21 November 2006 09:41 EST
Chris Barylick

A number of users have reported difficulties with their laptops after downloading and installing the MacBook 13" Firmware Update 1.1.

Problems have ranged from increased fan noise to increased operating temperatures to problems recognizing certain devices that had been seen before.

The firmware update, which was released yesterday, focused on fixing problems with the MacBook's temperature sensors and random shutdowns.

In some cases, downloading and reinstalling the most recent Mac OS X combo updater (for both the Intel and PowerPC hardware architectures) can resolve these issues. In other cases, utilities such as Cocktail or Tiger Cache Cleaner can help clear the system cache and resolve these issues.

In cases where the user is having significant problems, a firmware downgrade disc can be created, although this is applicable only to situation where the firmware update failed during installation. For instructions as to how to create the firmware downgrade disc, click here.

EFI Update Enables Some DOS Tools
16 November 2006 08:15 EST
PowerPage Contributor

Apple's latest EFI updates noted improved support for Boot Camp functionality. This was in the form of updated code to Apple's Compatibility Support Module (CSM). The CSM virtualizes BIOS functionality and allows "legacy" operating systems such as Windows and Linux to run on Intel-based Macs.

One of the largest criticism's of Apple's CSM was its lack of support for DOS-based applications. All other Intel system boards with EFI could run DOS-based applications without problem. Appple EFI/CSM criticism has not been delivered just by users, but also by developers such as Linus Torvalds.

The good news is that CSM support has been updated to include basic DOS support. While DOS does not work fully, some applications such as Maxtor's PowerMax now do work. These low-level diagnostic tools allow you to check, test, and repair components on your Mac with the low-level capacities of PC-counterparts.

Most of these tools are now commonly offered in .iso format, and can be burned to a CD-R with Disk Utility. However, such support is currently limited. Apple's CSM does not support a key DOS mode, A20, which is needed for many higher-memory calls. As such, most utilities still will not run. That said, you can now start diagnosing many hard drives with the same level of performance that you used to need to plug the drive into a PC to check.

MainMenu Makes Mac Maintenance Manageable
01 November 2006 12:22 EST
PowerPage Contributor

SantaSoftware has released MainMenu. The blurb on the homepage reads:

Don't have time to run all the various tools and scripts to keep your Mac running smoothly? MainMenu makes these tasks quick and easy, right from your menu bar.

Rebuilding your Spotlight library for faster searching, repairing permissions, cleaning caches to improve application performance, and even more advanced settings — such as enabling and disabling the Dashboard — are no more than two clicks away.

MainMenu is full of powerful maintenance tools to keep your Mac running like new, within a slick, simple interface.

It doesn't do anything that can't already be achieved using freeware utilities, but it does bring a lot of useful functions under one easy-to-find/easy-to-navigate menu. I've been using it for a while now, and it does all the above functions, along with a number of others that I usually have to use a separate utility for, including 'force empty trash'.

And it is free. Thank you Santa Software for my early Christmas present.

Fan Control 1.1 is a Must-Have for MBP Owners
26 October 2006 09:01 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

Fan Control 1.1 is an appication for controlling the fans in the MacBook Pro. It is is a prefpane than goes into your System Preferences and requires a restart after installation whereas smcFanControl is a standalone application.

Instead of setting the fans speed (like smcFanControl does) Fan Control 1.1 allows you to set an upper and lower temperature threshold for your MacBook Pro. The software then dynamically adjusts the fans speeds to keep your MBP at the temperature that you want it. Plus it displays a nice GUI with a graph to show you what is happening.

I set my base fan speed to be 3500 RPM (the max) and the upper and lower thresholds to be 104 and 158 degrees (the minimums) and my MBP (2.0GHz, week 7) barely breaks the 100 degree mark (according to CoreDuoTemp). My previous temps were consistently 135-165 degrees.

A little fan noise is small price to pay for a much cooler running MacBook Pro.

This software is required for all MacBook Pro owners and should be acquired by Apple and bundled into the Energy Saver System Preference. Period. End of story.

lilt.jpgJon Nathan has released a new application called Lilt that uses the ambient light and/or the sudden motion sensors in recent Mac portables to launch apps, files, or AppleScripts. Triggering a script allows you to do some pretty cool things (several example script actions are included).

Wave your hand over the light sensors (located under the speaker grills) and play your next iTunes track. Tilt the computer back and hear the time spoken to you. The possibilities are endless.

Aperture 1.5 Update Squeaks out as Promised
02 October 2006 08:30 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

Apple slipped out the 1.5 update to Aperture late Friday, just inside of Steve Jobs deadline of before the end of the week. Aperture 1.5 may not show up in Software Update (it didn't for me) and it requires that you have Mac OS 10.4.8 installed. You also have to register your copy of Aperture 1.x with Apple (this is not optional) and enter your serial number before it will let you download the 125MB update.

Aperture 1.5 delivers more than 20 new and enhanced features that improve file management, metadata handling, and image adjustment. This update also addresses numerous issues related to overall reliability, performance, and compatibility.

REVIEW: Fission - Lossless Audio Editing for Compressed Files
20 September 2006 01:23 EST
Youngmoo Kim

rogue-amoeba-fission.pngRogue Amoeba (makers of cool sound tools, such as Audio Hijack / Pro and Airfoil) has released Fission, a unique sound editor that allows for "Lossless" editing of compressed (mp3, AAC) audio files. The compressed formats split up a sound file into a series of small frames (~1/40 of a second each), which are very difficult to manipulate independently. Most applications simply decode an mp3 or AAC file to uncompressed audio for editing, and then re-compress the edited sound for export. The additional re-compression step results in some sound quality degradation.

Fission allows you to perform simple edits (cutting, splitting, and fading) in the compressed domain (without having to uncompress and re-compress), resulting in no additional quality loss (of course, the mp3 or AAC files you started with are lossy formats to begin with), hence the quotes around "lossless". It is ideally suited for the editing and splitting of large compressed files recorded from radio streams (e.g., using Audio Hijack Pro or a Griffin radio SHARK). Fission also includes a "Smart Split" feature that can automatically segment your files by searching for silence (that typically occur before and after songs or commercials). Very cool!

The interface is extremely easy to use (simple for novices, but familiar to anyone who's ever used a sound editor). I do have two small feature requests: 1) The ability to add split-markers in real-time during playback would be really helpful, and 2) Allow time to be displayed in units other than just minutes:seconds (e.g., samples). Overall, Fission is a great addition to any Mac/audio/music-lover's set of sound applications.

UPDATE: I just heard from Rogue Amoeba that my first feature request is already there (choose "Split at Playhead" or Cmd-T). My mistake! So my revised (very minor) feature request is to make this keyboard shortcut a single key, or allow it to be user-assignable.

Parallels Workstation 2.2 RC Runs Windows Vista
20 September 2006 09:01 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

Everyone's favorite virtualization tool, Parallels Desktop, has released an update that allows users to runs Windows Vista RC1 as a guest OS and eliminates the need to manually limit RAM via the command line.

We also released a new build for Desktop for Mac that eliminates kernel panics and substantially improves the performance of virtual machines running on Mac Pros and 64-bit iMacs. The build eliminates kernel panics and major bugs and adds support for Windows Vista RC1 as a guest OS. The new build is available at the main Desktop download page (http://www.parallels.com/en/download/desktop/update/).

In previous builds, Mac Pro and 64-bit iMac users who have machines with more than 2GB of RAM had to manually limit RAM via the command line in Terminal. In this build, we've included a tool that will help you take this action without any command line coding. With a single click you can limit your RAM and make your Mac Pro fully compatible with this build. You can easily revert your memory back at any time to the full configuration with the same tool. Its very important to note that limiting your RAM configuration to run Parallels Desktop will NOT prevent you from running any other OS X application (although they may run slightly slower). It simply helps our hypervisor "play nice" with the Mac Pro.

Mac OS X and Faxing
08 September 2006 07:00 EST
PowerPage Contributor

The following is some feedback I just types into Apple's Mac OS X Feedback web form:

-------------------------------

I wanted to take this opportunity to comment of the "Print & Fax" controls built into Mac OS X 10.3 (and later) System Preferences.

It is still necessary to correspond with some people in business via FAX. Some people still prefer to send some documents to our home-office in this way. (Broadband has not yet penetrated universally, anyway, so asking people to scan and email their documents is not always practical, even for those who are technologically literate enough to do so.)

Regarding the "Print & Fax" capability in Mac OS 10.3 and later...

When I want to receive a fax, I have to take a late-model Mac with 10.3 or later installed, have it configured to receive the fax, plug it into a phone line, and wait. Mac OS X doesn't put any icons in the menu bar to let you know the status of the built-in modem. (Why not?) Mac OS X doesn't give you a status report on modem activity, such as who the fax is coming from/caller ID, what page number, what bit rate, etc. (Why not?) Added to this, Apple sells external modems for newer Intel Macs as an extra-cost option.

This being the case, why doesn't Apple simply make a deal with the manufacturers of all of these multi-function machines (print/scan/copy/fax machines from Brother, HP, Lexmark, etc.) so that computers on a network (Airport via USB, or maybe via Printer Sharing) could send faxes though a multi-function machine hooked to a base station via USB, and maybe even receive faxes to a designated machine on the network? If a modern Mac can scan and print via USB, why can't it fax as well?
