Our friends at MacResQ announced Friday they are now offering SuperDrive upgrades for PowerBook G4 owners. Send in your PowerBook G4 and for US$399 they’ll upgrade it to a slot-loading, DVD- and CD-burning SuperDrive with a 24-hour US turnaround. The drive features a 1-year warranty and (most thankfully) full compatibility with Apple software like iDVD.

Sometimes one shareware download can change the way you work with your Mac so you never go back. All week this week I’ll be looking at my favorite shareware additions to the OS X menu bar. MultiDockX is the best dock switcher available now, period, thanks to its simplicity.

Now you can beef up a PowerBook G4 17″ to the same memory capacity as current Apple desktops, thanks to a new 1GB DDR333 memory module announced Friday by Trans Intl. (See iTrip remains the best FM transmitter for iPods on the market because of its flexibility in broadcasting to different FM frequencies. The iTrip allows you to broadcast your iPod’s music to nearby stereos, in a car or anywhere else; competitive products don’t work well because they have a fixed number of frequencies to which they can broadcast. This week Griffin made the iTrip work even better by releasing OS X Station Finder software to look up available frequencies in 240 U.S. cities. Now all we’re waiting for is the iTrip for the newest generation of iPods, which Griffin says is shipping soon — preorder available.

Apple has reportedly gotten the cooperation of only two of the labels that jumped onto iTunes Music Store for the Mac for the planned Windows version. This week, Microsoft publicly suggested it is “considering” a Windows music store of its own, reports CNet. Is Apple’s own success making labels nervous, afraid to wake the Redmond giant?

The BackOffice from Shaun Jackson Design has long been one of my favorite PowerBook bags; just read my original review from January 2002. Unfortunately, I had to part with this terrific luggage when I upgraded to the PowerBook G4 17″, which so far has been short on padded bags. Now, the wait is over, and Shaun Jackson has shipped the “BIG” BackOffice.

Greg “Joz” Joswiak’s “Feature” Presentation was, fortunately, not just a rehash of WWDC’s announcements. Instead, the presentation focused on news of particular interest to pros, and while no major announcements were made, there were some interesting gems, particularly some new details about Panther. Let’s forget for a moment that East Coast Macworlds used to have “Keynotes,” not Feature Presentations, and that so many press were in attendance clearly having their time wasted, and take a look at what new details did come out of Joz’s presentation.
