Beat `Book: Live, Live in Concert

New Yorkers who want to catch Ableton Live in action, I’ll be in concert Tuesday June 11 at the Lower East Side bar, The Slipper Room, performing Splooge Factory, part of Dynamic Duos, with poet Christina Springer and choreographer Kate Taylor and dancers: musical dance theater about race, fetish, and the sex industry. Live has turned out to be a fantastic product for mixing together loops from avante garde experimental electronics to salsas, sambas, and bossa novas, to West African drumming and dance grooves, into a hybrid that’s something altogether different.

To celebrate the creative potential of beat mixing — and yes, even experimental contemporary composers in grad school like me are finding new things to do with it — next week will be Beat Week here on the PowerPage. I’ll talk about the products available for the Mac and how you can turn your machine into a portable Beat Station, regardless of what kind of musician you are or what your experience level. And, NYC metro PowerPagers, if you can make Dynamic Duos, catch me after the show and introduce yourself. Drop me a line if you want more details on that gig or have ideas for Beat Week coverage! (Remember, “weeks” at the PowerPage have a tendency to become months once we get going with something!)
