The new Apple peripherals are out and the ice-cold felines at iFixit have torn them down and posted the results.

The Magic Trackpad 2, the Magic Mouse 2 and the Magic keyboard apparently share many of the same chips. All of them sport the Broadcom BCM20733 Bluetooth 3.0 chip, even though the Trackpad 2 officially requires a Bluetooth 4.0-capable Mac.

The Magic Trackpad 2 is said to rely on the same Force Touch technology in current MacBooks, including four strain gauges for measuring pressure, and a similar Taptic Engine. The Trackpad largely only scales the technology up to a larger size.

applepackaging

Your product’s packaging has to look pretty enough to be on an Apple Store shelf.

And Apple will help you with that.

A series of redesigned packages for several Mophie battery packs were recently spotted at an Apple Store in Japan. The boxes match the style used for Apple’s own products, with large images and minimalist text against a stark white background. It’s unknown how many other companies may have updated boxes on shelves.

This isn’t the most auspicious beginning to Apple’s partnership with Beats.

Also, if you bought a Beats Pill XL speaker at an Apple store, there’s a chance it could catch fire.

Apple has issued a rare recall notice on the Beats Pill XL portable Bluetooth speaker sold in Apple Stores and various other retailers. The voluntary recall cites a situation in which the battery can overheat and become a fire hazard. Apple purchased Beats Electronics and Beats Music for some US$3 billion in 2014. The current Beats Pill XL hardware has remained the same since Apple purchased the speaker company.

Sometimes it’s the lesser known ports that allow for the best peripherals.

A number of third party vendors are looking to use the small diagnostic port hidden inside one of the Apple Watch’s lugs to charge the device. One accessory maker discussed this approach, opening up the possibility of a “Made for Apple Watch” program down the line.

“Our engineers have been able to independently confirm that the 6-pin diagnostic port underneath the Apple Watch case can be used for charging,” the designers of battery band Reserve Strap wrote in a recent post. This is an undocumented functionality, and there is no word on whether Apple will allow continued access via the port.

These are the first days of USB-C and we’re curious about it.

It’s sort of like having someone new in your life, except it’s a digital standard that Apple is applying for power, video, communications and almost everything else under the sun.

Which is pretty interesting, the raw facts stating that USB-C can apparently support 100W of power + HDMI 1080p + USB 3.x data rates at the same time. Even so, Apple is now offering its USB-C Digital AV Multipart Adapter, a US$79.00 device that offers a power, HDMI and USB bridge in one device.
