appletv_2ndgenDidn’t I just call Apple out on this? Congratulations Apple TV, you’ve hung in there and now made it to the big times! Early Tuesday, Apple’s online store went offline for some updates and when it came back, the Apple TV finally had its own section to call home. Rather than being relegated to the Accessories section of the Apple Store, now it’s listed alongside the sections for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iPod and even has its own accessory section that lists some products for the Apple TV that I had never seen before. It appears that the Airport Extreme and Airport Express have found a home here as well. In addition, you now have the option to buy refurbished Apple TVs at $25 less than standard retail.

intel_ceo_bryan_ces-2014Wearable technology seems to be the hot topic these days. With products like the Pebble smartwatch creeping into the mainstream, every tech company on the planet now seems itching to attach something onto your body. This week, CES hosted companies that had more smartwatch solutions, but Intel may have taken the lead in proposing where wearables are headed next. While chief executive Brian Krzanich didn’t announce any actual products, per se, however he did introduce a number of proof-of-concept devices designed by Intel that represent where Intel is targeting some of its new technology.

TypoKeyboard-vs-Q10

In the litigious world of  tech companies who scramble daily to protect their patents and intellectual property, you can expect anything claiming to be new and innovative to be hit by a roomful of lawyers saying it isn’t true. Such is the case with the Typo Keyboard case which was getting ready to launch at this week’s CES event in Las Vegas. Typo Products, which was founded by Ryan Seacrest and his business partner Laurence Hallier, was hit with a lawsuit from Blackberry claiming copyright infringement of Blackberry’s own keyboard design.

Screenshot 2014-01-02 23.59.00We’ve talked quite a bit about Google Glass recently, and I even had a chance to drive it around the block a bit thanks to Jason O’Grady. One of my biggest problems with Glass, somewhat ironically, is that I already wear a pair of glasses which made for very awkward placement of the Glass frame on my face. Without my glasses, it was a strain to look at the tiny display hovering over my eye. According to Slash Gear, however, the solution to this problem may not be far away with prices starting at $99.

Christmas-GiftHere’s part 2 of my Gift Guide, which may turn into that “what I get when I return my Christmas gifts for credit” list, seeing as how it’s only 6 days until Christmas. The second half includes a number of gift ideas that I’ve stolen borrowed from some other gift guides because they are really good suggestions for things I’d like to get for myself. I’ll throw in a couple more of my own at the end.

Christmas-GiftIt’s that time of year again, when everyone is scrambling to fill their gift giving list for the holidays, and for those that have tech geeks in their family or other circles, it is getting more and more difficult to find that perfect gift. Thankfully it is also the time when every magazine and blog is posting their holiday gift guides, and the PowerPage is no exception. So here then are 10 or so items that aren’t crazy expensive, culled from other gift guides or my own product wish list, that offer a nice range of items and that I wouldn’t mind seeing under the tree (if I didn’t have it already).

Smell-O-Vision for the iPhone?

e1eed_popcorn3_610x380It was bound to happen eventually. Believe it or not, crafty inventors have been trying to include more human senses to the media experience since 1906. Many attempts to provide audiences with this additional dimension in films resulted in many creative attempts, but has yet to provide a satisfactory experience. There has to be some parallels to the film industry and these unique attempts at box-office draw and the developing popularity of smartphones. I bet a study could be done on this, but likely people would find it as interesting as smell-o-vision itself, which was negligible.

Ryan Seacrest invests $1 million in his new iPhone case

typo-keyboards.pngWho would have thought he was also a tech entrepreneur? The “American Idol” host and guy who seems to do everything Ryan Seacrest just invested $1 million in his new iPhone attachment startup called the Typo Keyboard. It’s basically an iPhone case that adds a physical keyboard to the device. Their promo video is pretty good, and highlights a few of the cases pretty compelling features. By using the Typo Keyboard, there is no need for the iPhone’s touch keyboard to slide up, so you actually end up with more screen to view while you’re typing away. The physical keyboard is also illuminated which means it’ll still be easy to type in the dark. According to Business Insider;

“The idea originated because apparently Seacrest (and all his friends) used two phones: One with a keyboard for typing and correspondence and an iPhone for virtually everything else. After trying out and hating other keyboard models on the market, Seacrest and the team spent two years developing Typo.”

Seacrest co-founded the company with Show Media CEO Laurence Hallier and the duo expects to invest more than $5 million to continue to create variations on the attachment for other phones and tablets. The Typo Keyboard is expected to debut at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The keyboard case will initially be available for the iPhone 5 and 5S and can be preordered for $99.
