If you were curious as to what happened to CurrentC, the intended mobile payment service that was intended to compete with Apple Pay a few years ago, there’s an answer: JPMorgan bought it out.

Oddly enough, Chase Bank played both sides and was one of a few major banks to partner with Apple when Apple Pay launched back in the fall of 2014, but several retailers including CVS and Walmart blocked or denied plans to accept Apple Pay due to an upcoming CurrentC app and commitments to MCX, the company developing CurrentC.

Some CurrentC backers including Rite Aid and Best Buy eventually changed their course and added Apple Pay as a payment option in stores, and last summer efforts to bring CurrentC to market finally ended.

Apple Pay might just wind up on top.

A few years ago, when the technology was first introduced, it seemed like a vague idea. Today, according to new survey data released by Boston Retail Partners, Apple Pay is not only booming, it’s the mobile payments standard, surpassing PayPal, which had nearly a decade headstart. This, despite a much smaller market share than Android, and this despite continued ignorance as to the very existence of Apple Pay among consumers.

It may also be good for retailers in the long run.

Apple Pay may be en route to Japan with a little help from Sony.

The current rumor has it that Apple has partnered with Sony to bring its Apple Pay service to Japan. As has been previously rumored, Apple will make future versions of the iPhone compatible with Sony’s FeliCa technology to allow Japanese citizens to use Apple Pay for contactless payments at FeliCa-compatible terminals.

FeliCa is Sony’s tap-to-pay format, which has been widely adopted in Japan. FeliCa is able to process transactions in a fraction of a second, making it suitable for use in a fast-paced transit environment.
