Apple announces fourth-gen Apple TV, points out enhanced Siri features, new remote control

It looks like the Apple TV just became more than a “hobby” over at 1 Infinite Loop.

Over at today’s media event, Apple announced the fourth-generation Apple TV. The new unit, which appears to be measurably thicker than the previous generations, sports a new user interface, an operating system written for it (known as “tvOS”), a Touch surface to its new remote control, A8 processor, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Lightning connector at the bottom of the remote and full Siri connectivity capable of searching across multiple apps such as Hulu, Netflix, HBO and Showtime to find content via criteria such as cast, director, movie name and age rating.

Apple Store web site down in advance of “Hey Siri” media event

As expected, Apple’s online store has been taken offline as of Wednesday morning. With less than six hours before the company’s scheduled media event, Apple is apparently configuring the soon-to-be-announced inventory to go online.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 6s Plus, iPad Pro, iPad mini 4, the fourth-gen Apple TV, iOS 9, watchOS 2 and assorted Apple bands and finishes.

Rumor: Next-gen Apple TV remote to feature motion sensors, features targeted at casual gamers

It’s an interesting rumor.

And there’s a decent chance it might be true.

According to recent reports, the next-gen Apple TV will feature an A8 processor, a native SDK for creating apps and a motion sensitive remote control with multi-axis sensors, complete with a touchpad on the top, physical buttons on the bottom and a microphone for Siri.

Rumor: Fourth-gen Apple TV to be priced under $200, will debut in October

It’s the rumor mill that keeps things interesting.

With Apple’s September 9th media event coming up, sources have stated that a fourth-gen Apple TV will be available for under US4200 and will become available this October. Apple executives are apparently still finalizing the price of the revamped living room device, but the latest options call for a starting price point of either US$149 or US$199, both higher than the third-generation Apple TV…

The next-gen device will arrive at a premium price compared to the US$60 to US$99 price range found on the current model Apple TV, is anticipated to be similar to the current model in appearance, but will be thicker and slightly wider, sources say.

Apple sends out invitations for September 9th media event, hints at new iPhone, Apple TV hardware

The rumors of the media event on September 9th were true.

Apple just sent out official invitations to assorted media outlets for its media event on Wednesday, September 9th. The invitation teases the reader with “Hey Siri, give us a hint” and the event itself will take place at 10 AM PT at Bill Graham auditorium in San Francisco, California. Apple’s September event is set to include the next generation iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus as well as the long awaited Apple TV hardware update.

If you were hoping for a next-gen Apple TV device, it looks like it will be out this fall.

If you were looking for Apple’s TV streaming service, you might have to wait until next year.

Sources close to the story have stated that while Apple originally wanted to announce a live streaming service at this year’s iPhone event, those plans were put on ice as deals with major networks like CBS, 21st Century Fox and NBC have yet to be brokered.

Apple quietly recalling some Apple TV units, cites Wi-Fi issues

This is why recall programs exist.

Apparently, a few Apple TV units have been quietly recalled due to Wi-Fi-related problems. In one case, a user received an email from Apple Apple informing him that his device has a faulty part.

Apple is offering affected customers the opportunity to exchange their faulty Apple TV unit for a functional one. The company is reaching out to each affected customer individually and has not updated its website to acknowledge the recall, suggesting that only a few users received Apple TVs with the faulty part.

Rumor: Apple to launch fourth-gen Apple TV, updated App Store this fall

We’ve been around this rumor before, but it seems to be picking up steam again.

A new report says that a fourth-generation Apple TV, App Store and all the trimmings will arrive in September. The new Apple TV will be unveiled along with the latest iPhones, and sport Apple’s A8 chip along with a slimmer look.

The new Apple TV will reportedly feature a control with a touchpad input, and feature Siri on board.

Patent application shows possible Apple TV remote with built-in Touch ID sensor

Apple may not have released its anticipated next-gen Apple TV console at the Worldwide Developers Conference, but it appears that the company is still working on one.

A recently published patent shows an Apple TV remote with a built-in Touch ID sensor.

As is often the case, the patent is expressed in extremely broad terms, referring to a “sensor configured to detect a biometric characteristic of a user” and mentioning everything from iris detection to voice sensing, but a fingerprint is included and appears to be what is shown in the main drawing.
