Screenshot 2014-01-09 14.55.08I was doing my daily web browsing and while looking for CES stuff, and stumbled upon this, a fake 2027 CES presentation from Omnicorp. Don’t recognize the name “Omnicorp”?! Shame on you, now go straight to Netflix and queue up Robocop. Ok, it’s not on Netflix streaming, so shame on them too. Well, find it and watch it for goodness sake, it’s a classic! Anyway, Omnicorp is a fictional corporation in the near future that buys the Detroit police force in the hopes of monetizing it. In order to save money, Omnicorp hopes to build its own robotic police force and lay off all the human ones.

3015176-inline-i-1-snappy-cam-faster-appleNo more than a week into 2014 and Apple is already scooping up another small technology company. This time it’s an iPhone app called SnappyCam and its developer, John Papandriopoulos. Don’t go looking for it in the AppStore though, it has unfortunately been removed, so if you ‘snapped’ it up (couldn’t resist) consider yourself lucky. As for everyone else, wait a while and you may see the benefits of the app showing up in an iOS update. So what was so amazing about SnappyCam?

iOS-vs-AndroidBefore we ring out 2013, we probably want to slip in that Apple did extremely well against Android over the holiday season. Regarding apps, it appears that the AppStore did quite a bit of business around Christmas as compared to Android. IBM’s latest Digital Analytics Benchmark Report found that purchases made from iOS devices accounted for about 23 percent of the online shopping done on Christmas Day in the U.S.

iTunes Connect available again

Apple-iTunes-Connect-Mobile-AppDevelopers were (probably) happy last Friday when iTunes Connect went back online. iTunes Connect is the tool that developers use to upload apps, change text and pricing, and monitor their sales in the AppStore. Back in November, Apple sent out emails to developers notifying them of the holiday downtime, affecting both Mac and iOS software.

“iTunes Connect will be temporarily unavailable from Saturday, December 21, to Friday, December 27, 2013.

During that time, iTunes Connect will not be accessible and you will not be able to submit any apps or In-App Purchases. Processing of any Newsstand Atom feeds will be delayed until after December 27. Sales and Trends reports via the Autoingestion tool will be available but may also be delayed.”

The email went on to mention several other activities that would be postponed until Dec. 27th. So, you can expect a few app updates rolling out this week.

MyGlass_for_iosYou might have caught some stories about the long awaited MyGlass app appearing on the AppStore, and then quickly disappearing leaving iPhone users crying, “nooooooooooooo!”. Well, they can relax, Google re-released the app and it’s available for download. About a week ago, I had the opportunity to play with a Google Glass without having to shell out $1500. As it happens, someone I knew had one and was willing to ship it out to me to play with (that “someone” being Jason O’Grady from The Apple Core). My full review will be available soon, so I’ll skip over a lot of Glass details to focus on the app and what it adds to the Glass-iOS experience.

Smell-O-Vision for the iPhone?

e1eed_popcorn3_610x380It was bound to happen eventually. Believe it or not, crafty inventors have been trying to include more human senses to the media experience since 1906. Many attempts to provide audiences with this additional dimension in films resulted in many creative attempts, but has yet to provide a satisfactory experience. There has to be some parallels to the film industry and these unique attempts at box-office draw and the developing popularity of smartphones. I bet a study could be done on this, but likely people would find it as interesting as smell-o-vision itself, which was negligible.

Apple includes US in 12 Days app giveaway

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 10.36.56 AMThis is nothing new to European and Canadian iThing customers, but Apple has released the 12 Days app which offers 12 days of free downloads, including music, apps, books, movies, and more. The free items are only valid for 24 hours and some content may not be available in all areas. The promotion starts on Dec. 26th and runs until Jan. 6th and is the first time Apple has offered it to US customers. For the past three years (introduced in Dec 2010) that the holiday promotion has been going, the goodies have only been available in Europe and Canada, although it was only available in the UK the first year, adding eligible locations in Europe and Canada in 2011. According to a MacNN article from 2011, there is a history behind the 12 Days giveaway.

“[...] the countdown has its roots in Eastern Christianity, which traditionally holds the Feast of Epiphany on Jan. 6 to celebrate Jesus’ baptism.”

“Many countries outside the United States mark at least the first of the twelve nights, often called Boxing Day or St. Stephens Day. The twelfth night is also seen as the traditional day to remove the last vestiges of Christmas decorations and celebratory foods.”

There is also that 12 Days of Christmas song. This holiday promotion is the second offering from Apple this year. A few days ago we reported on the Holiday Playlist music giveaway which offered 8 free holiday songs from the iTunes Music Store. There’s no calling Apple the Grinch this year.
