geoeye-1-satellite-apple-460Well, perhaps that is a stretch, but Apple’s possible connection with the NSA was revealed in a report dating back to 2008. Reuters explains that the report outlined a system that the NSA was developing, called DROPOUTJEEP, which would be software implanted into an iPhone that allows infiltrators to push and pull and retrieve data from iPhones such as contact lists. The report didn’t actually specify any involvement by or with Apple, although the iPhone is referenced in the report.

Christmas-GiftHere’s part 2 of my Gift Guide, which may turn into that “what I get when I return my Christmas gifts for credit” list, seeing as how it’s only 6 days until Christmas. The second half includes a number of gift ideas that I’ve stolen borrowed from some other gift guides because they are really good suggestions for things I’d like to get for myself. I’ll throw in a couple more of my own at the end.

Christmas-GiftIt’s that time of year again, when everyone is scrambling to fill their gift giving list for the holidays, and for those that have tech geeks in their family or other circles, it is getting more and more difficult to find that perfect gift. Thankfully it is also the time when every magazine and blog is posting their holiday gift guides, and the PowerPage is no exception. So here then are 10 or so items that aren’t crazy expensive, culled from other gift guides or my own product wish list, that offer a nice range of items and that I wouldn’t mind seeing under the tree (if I didn’t have it already).

Walmart is selling the iPhone 5c for $27 this Friday!

iPhone-5CWalmart is cashing in on the holiday spirit and people’s desire for colorful tech. The iPhone 5C has not been a big seller for Apple, but retailers are doing what they can to bring customers onboard. The LA Times reports that Walmart is making some deals to move the 5C;

“The iPhone 5c has struggled to sell and Wal-Mart has been discounting it since it was released in September. Friday’s sale price won’t be as good at what Wal-Mart offered on Black Friday — $45 for an iPhone 5c with a $75 gift card thrown in — but you’ll be hard pressed to find the iPhone 5c for cheaper than $27.”

Walmart’s Friday sale includes other Apple products, as well as other electronic items, games, and clothing. The sale begins Friday at 8 a.m. local time. Sale prices are in effect through Dec. 24 or while supplies last.

Ryan Seacrest invests $1 million in his new iPhone case

typo-keyboards.pngWho would have thought he was also a tech entrepreneur? The “American Idol” host and guy who seems to do everything Ryan Seacrest just invested $1 million in his new iPhone attachment startup called the Typo Keyboard. It’s basically an iPhone case that adds a physical keyboard to the device. Their promo video is pretty good, and highlights a few of the cases pretty compelling features. By using the Typo Keyboard, there is no need for the iPhone’s touch keyboard to slide up, so you actually end up with more screen to view while you’re typing away. The physical keyboard is also illuminated which means it’ll still be easy to type in the dark. According to Business Insider;

“The idea originated because apparently Seacrest (and all his friends) used two phones: One with a keyboard for typing and correspondence and an iPhone for virtually everything else. After trying out and hating other keyboard models on the market, Seacrest and the team spent two years developing Typo.”

Seacrest co-founded the company with Show Media CEO Laurence Hallier and the duo expects to invest more than $5 million to continue to create variations on the attachment for other phones and tablets. The Typo Keyboard is expected to debut at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The keyboard case will initially be available for the iPhone 5 and 5S and can be preordered for $99.

google_glass_grey-580-90Last week, Google finally made the Glass API for Google Glass open to all developers. Previously, the API was only available to developers that actually shelled out the $1500 to own the Google Glass hardware and were added to a whitelist of approved owners. Now Google doesn’t care if you have the software or not. TechCrunch breaks down the methods for developers to write software for Google Glass.

amazon-experimenting-with-drones-that-will-deliver-packages-in-30-minutesI had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April 1st (seriously, I usually can’t remember what month it is), but apparently Jeff Bezos has every intention of delivering packages using autonomous helicopter drones flown straight to your doorstep, or personal heli-pad, in 30 minutes or less. He does admit that it is a few years off, but Amazon engineers are hard at work perfecting the technology. In a detailed article, Bloomberg recounts the Amazon CEO’s plan which was unveiled on CBS’s “60 Minutes” news program. In it, Bezos shows interviewer Charlie Rose the flying machines, called octocopters, that can serve as delivery vehicles carrying as much as 5 pounds within a 10-mile radius of an Amazon fulfillment center.

Screenshot 2013-11-26 13.26.32Earlier this morning, Apple sent out emails announcing their Black Friday event. Friday, November 29th, online shopping begins as of midnight PST until 11:59 PM, and retail stores as soon as they open. Some retail store locations are reported to open as early as 6 AM, but times may vary depending on location. No hints from Apple as to what the sale items will be, so you’ll probably have to stay up late on Thursday to see if your favorite iThing is discounted.
